Overview
The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) RN Coordinator provides clinical coordination and direct nursing care within the bariatric surgery program, serving as a key member of the multidisciplinary team. This role includes pre- and postoperative assessments, perioperative planning, patient education, triage, and support through seminars and groups to ensure safe transitions and optimal outcomes. In collaboration with the MBS Medical Director and operational leaders, the Coordinator facilitates program compliance with MBSAQIP accreditation standards.
Responsibilities- Facilitate accreditation activities and maintain protocols; monitor outcomes data and drive quality improvement.
- Educate staff and troubleshoot patient safety concerns; act as liaison between the facility and bariatric surgeons.
- Manage call schedules and coverage criteria; coordinate with the MBS Reviewer for timely MBSAQIP registry reporting.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with governing agency requirements (DNV-G, federal and state regulations, MBSAQIP standards).
- Maintain knowledge of preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative processes; coordinate patient care pathways and documentation.
- Serve as the primary clinical contact for bariatric patients from consult through long-term follow-up; conduct triage by phone and in person.
- Perform comprehensive preoperative nursing assessments (vitals, comorbidities, medication reconciliation, functional status, readiness for surgery) and coordinate pre-op testing and consultations.
- Provide standardized pre-op education and reinforce postoperative instructions.
- Triage and manage postoperative concerns; assess wounds, hydration, pain, and signs of infection; escalate per protocol as needed.
- Collaborate with leadership and staff to address clinic needs and implement evidence-based improvements.
- Coordinate data collection and ensure accuracy of patient records; facilitate timely reporting to MBSAQIP Registry.
- Associates in Nursing
- Bachelors in Nursing preferred
- RN Lic AZ
- BLS
- Minimum 2-3 years of clinical nursing experience in perioperative, PACU, surgical med-surg, case management, or bariatric care; prior bariatric experience preferred
