This position is advertised from the minimum to mid-point hourly rate. Salary will be determined on education and experience at the time of offer.

NATURE OF WORK

Under limited supervision, performs professional direct medical care and treatment to prisoners within the Yuma County Detention Center; this position has department specific responsibility.

Examines prisoners and establishes a medical diagnosis by obtaining and evaluating comprehensive health histories, orders, performs, and interprets laboratory screening and diagnostic testing and procedures, and conducts physical assessments; evaluates and treats prisoners as medically necessary, to include prescription of medication, administers injections and immunizations, instructs prisoners relating to prescribed treatments, and provides counseling on health problems; identifies, develops, implements, and evaluates a plan of care for prisoners to promote, maintain and restore health;

evaluates the effectiveness of medications and treatments, and adjust as necessary; collaborates with physicians and other health care providers; assists physicians with special procedures and treatments; performs minor procedures such as sutures, incision, and drainage of abscess, simple splints, punch biopsies, and pelvis exams; writes standing orders and updates in collaboration with the physician; provides ongoing health maintenance and clinical management;

evaluates clinical situations, exercises independent judgment, and makes critical decisions within guidelines of licensure; develops, revises, interprets, implements, and evaluates clinical guidelines and protocols; responds and assesses medical emergency situations and works cooperatively with Detention and other emergency personnel; conducts preventive health care education and counseling; may participate in outreach activities; refers prisoners to medical community resources for care, diagnostic studies, information and/or specialty treatments;

participates in peer review, in-service training and education, quality improvement processes, and other meetings necessary to assess and improve health needs; acts as a consultant to other professionals; documents prisoners’ encounters and medical care; maintains electronic medical records including the recording of chief complaints, review of systems, health history, diagnosis and treatment plan; assists in the collection of statistical data pertaining to services provided;

prepares reports and referral information for outside specialists and services as necessary; supervises, assigns, and reviews the work of nursing staff in the absence of the nursing supervisor; provides staff performance information for evaluation completeness; acts as preceptor for other nurse practitioners, medical students, and interns during clinicals; educates staff on protocols, current clinical events, and presentations; promotes and adheres to workplace values of accountability, commitment, and teamwork;

coordinates, orders, and maintains supplies, medical equipment, and medication; actively participates in cost containment measures; maintains appropriate security and confidentiality of medical records and other sensitive information encountered in the performance of his/her duties; assures compliance with nursing practices, and Department’s policies and procedures; regular and reliable attendance is required; performs other duties as assigned.

Masters of Science in Nursing (MNS) from a nationally accredited college or university; valid unrestricted Arizona Nurse Practitioner License;
National Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner; must have at least six (6) months of clinical practice experience in public health or community settings; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; must possess or be able to obtain by the time of hire a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life…
