Court Security Officer – Yuma County
This position is advertised from the minimum hourly rate. Salary will be determined based on education and experience at the time of offer.

Nature of Work
- Maintain general security and safety of the Superior Court and Justice Courts.
- Operate metal detectors and x‑ray screening machines to detect concealed weapons and hazardous objects.
- Prevent unauthorized access to restricted areas; patrol facilities as directed and monitor video cameras.
- Provide customer service as required.
- Patrol buildings, facilities, and grounds; provide a visible, armed security presence at the public entrance and throughout the court buildings.
- Carry and safely employ department issued firearms and other defensive weapons as situations dictate.
- Address situations that may be or become a disturbance or hazard to the courthouse; issue identification badges to control employee bypass entrances and prevent unauthorized access.
- Monitor and regularly test closed‑circuit TV and various fire and security alarm systems; serve as a security escort or presence in a variety of court situations.
- Respond to medical emergencies and render first aid and CPR as a first responder.
- Participate on the superior court emergency response team, following the courts disaster/emergency response procedures.
- Implement emergency procedures as directed and when appropriate.
- Investigate, prepare, and submit reports on security incidents and complete daily incident recaps.
- Maintain absolute confidentiality of work‑related issues, customer records, and restricted county information.
- Abide by the Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees; perform related duties as required or assigned.
Experience and Education
- High school diploma or GED OR an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field.
- Two years of relevant, responsible law enforcement, military, private security, or closely related experience; OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Additional Requirements
- Pass criminal background and reference checks; pass a psychological evaluation and polygraph examination.
- Maintain Arizona Committee on Judicial Education and Training (COJET) yearly accreditation.
- Hold a valid Arizona Driver’s License with a clean driving record; must attend and successfully complete a 40‑hour Court Security Officer Training course and be certified in accordance with standards set by the Arizona Administrative Office of the Courts.
- Attend and successfully complete a 40‑hour Court Security Officer Firearms Academy.
- Complete all annual training requirements.
- Work includes 8 or 10‑hour shifts, weekend rotations, and workstation rotations.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
- Standard office environment and court facilities; may be exposed to physical harm, infectious diseases, and/or physical violence.
- Required to physically restrain persons, and effectively deal with stressful and potentially hazardous emergency situations.
- Maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards; may be required to lift and/or carry people, supplies, equipment, and other heavy items.
- Must be able to quickly ascend stairs to respond quickly in an emergency situation.
- Must be able to wear and carry assigned duty gear, including a ballistic vest.
- Must be able to stand for long periods, walk, and use stairs.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of applicable State of Arizona statutes, rules, administrative orders, policies and procedures, applicable Federal rules and requirements;
Yuma County and Superior Court policies and procedures;
Superior Court in Yuma County‑Rules of the Judicial Merit System and the Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees; principles and equipment used in court security; standard Operating Guidelines for the Security Division of Superior Court in Yuma County; legal terminology and court processes and procedures; community resources and services. - Skills in interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds; working under pressure in a dynamic work environment; communicating effectively with colleagues, court staff, and the public.
