AI Engineer, Data Scientist
As a graduation intern within the Digital & Technology team, you will work on one of the more forward‑looking areas of Albert Heijn. Together with colleagues from the team, you will explore how we can evolve our AI assistant, Steijn, from an information tool into a platform that can take meaningful actions on behalf of customers. A great opportunity to gain real experience within a large tech organization and grow as a developer or researcher.
Yournew job and workplace.
As a graduation intern, you will contribute to the development of agentic capabilities with the Steijn V3 platform. Currently, Steijn is focused on retrieving information and generating responses. The next step is enabling it to take actions on behalf of users — such as scheduling orders or activating personal bonus offers. This introduces real challenges around safety and trust that you will help investigate.
Responsibilities- Research and design “human‑in‑the‑loop” patterns to ensure users stay in control of actions taken by the system.
- Prototype safeguards for agent‑driven actions, such as scheduling orders or activating offers.
- Explore how these capabilities can be implemented in a scalable and user‑friendly way.
The assignment is intentionally open, leaving room for you to pursue your own interests and ideas. You might lean more towards AI engineering, UX, or security — we are open to where your strengths take you.
In this role, you will work 32–40 hours per week, partly from our head office in Zaandam and partly from home.
At Albert Heijn, we believe it is important that you can be yourself in an environment that embraces different perspectives, where curiosity and mutual appreciation are central. For this position, we especially encourage candidates who strengthen the diversity within our team in the broadest sense of the word.
What we offer you.- An interesting and varied graduation internship at Albert Heijn’s head office for 5–6 months starting in September 2026.
- An internship with real responsibility, where you gain genuine work experience.
- Guidance from the team throughout your graduation project.
- An internship allowance (€500 per four weeks) plus travel expense reimbursement.
- Social events and networking opportunities with all interns at our head office.
- An inclusive environment where you can develop yourself both personally and professionally.
- You are currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree, preferably in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- You have an affinity with Generative AI, LLMs, or conversational AI systems.
- You are interested in topics such as responsible AI, security, or user‑centred design.
- Experience with AI tooling, APIs, or cloud platforms is a plus.
Additionally, you are:
- Someone who can work independently and takes ownership of their project.
- A team player who communicates clearly and enjoys collaborating across disciplines.
- Curious enough to get to grips with complex systems and enjoy figuring things out.
