Applied Scientist

Are you excited about working at the forefront of applied research in an industry setting? TR Labs is the AI Research & Development arm of Thomas Reuters. We are seeking scientists with a passion for solving problems using state‑of‑the‑art artificial intelligence and machine learning.

As an Applied Scientist, you will develop and implement machine learning and AI solutions to address business problems across Thomson Reuters’ legal, tax, and regulatory domains. Working with guidance from senior team members, you will design experiments, build models, and translate research into production‑ready features. This role involves strong collaboration with product and engineering teams to deliver measurable impact for customers and to learn from deep domain experts about a variety of complex real‑world problems.

• Implement and evaluate solutions with large language models (LLMs) and LLM evaluation frameworks.
• Work with retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG), tool‑using agents, and agentic frameworks.
• Maintain shared codebases and use version control systems.
• Engage with deep domain experts and learn complex real‑world problem domains.

• PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• 1–2 years of hands‑on experience building systems using modern techniques in information retrieval, NLP, machine learning, or generative AI.
• Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with a modern ML framework (e.g., PyTorch, JAX, Deep Speed).
• Experience working with cloud development environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Strong communication and problem‑solving skills with the ability to work effectively across functions.
• Experience implementing and evaluating solutions with large language models and LLM evaluation frameworks such as OpenAI Evals, HELM, or LM Harness.
• Experience with RAG, tool‑using agents, and agentic frameworks.
• Publications or preprints in relevant venues such as NeurIPS, ACL, EMNLP, ICLR, or SIGIR.
• Experience with production code and MLOps practices.
