Student Assistant for Strategic Projects

ETH Zürich is well known for its excellent education, ground-breaking fundamental research and for implementing its results directly into practice.

Student Assistant for Strategic Projects

The Strategy and Analytics Team helps ETH Zurich make decisions about teaching. We take data that exists at different levels (individual courses, degree programmes, whole departments) and combine it into measures that show what teaching and learning conditions actually look like across the university. The Rectorate and the departments use these analyses to gain a systemic view of teaching and decide what to do next.

As a student assistant, you will support the QdL (Quantification of Teaching Engagement) project in its day-to-day work: preparing and analysing existing data on teaching activity, turning the results into clear charts and short presentations, and keeping the project's documentation in order. You will also support other related projects of the Strategy and Analytics Team with minor preparatory work. Overall, this role gives you a close view of how a university measures teaching engagement.

Fixed-term position for a maximum of one year from the start date.

Start date:

by arrangement,as soon as possible.

Project background

The QdL project aims to build a consistent picture of teaching by making its full breadth visible, described in measures that are intelligible and shared by all 16 departments. The goal is a better internal representation of what teaching actually involves, and more transparency about it within ETH.

Reaching this goal means understanding what the existing data says, where data are missing, which ways of describing teaching engagement work for every department, and how to present results so that they are legible to people who did not build the model. That is where this position comes in.

You will support the QdL (Quanification of Teaching Engagement) project in the following focus areas:

  • Preparing and structuring existing data sets and carrying out descriptive analyses (mainly in Excel)
  • Turning results into charts, tables and short slide sets, and presenting them to the team
  • Documenting data sources, definitions and processing steps so that analyses stay traceable
  • Administrative support for the project: documentation, correspondence, minute-taking, scheduling and filing
  • Assisting with the preparation of meetings and workshops, including materials and follow-up documentation
  • Basic desk research and preparatory work for other related projects of the Strategy & Analytics Team
Profile
  • You are a Bachelor's (from the 3rd semester) or Master's student at a Swiss university in psychology, sociology, education or a related social science
  • You have first experience in a teaching context, e.g., as a tutor or teaching assistant, or supervising exercise sessions
  • You are confident with Excel and comfortable working with structured data
  • You work accurately and in a structured way, and you pay attention to detail in data and documentation
  • You work independently, take the initiative in clarifying open questions, and handle internal and partly confidential data with discretion
  • You can explain results concisely to people who did not do the analysis
  • You communicate confidently in German and English, written and spoken
We offer
  • Gain insight into a strategic project to enhance quality in teaching at ETH Zurich
  • Have the opportunity to contribute student perspectives
  • Room to develop your analytical, visualisation and communication skills, with close guidance from an experienced project team
  • Approx. 10–15 hours per week, arranged flexibly around your lectures and examination periods, remunerated on the basis of hours actually worked
  • Start date:

by arrangement, as soon as possible
