Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Doctoral researcher in optimization for robust railway timetables
Location: Zürich

Doctoral Project:
Robust Railway Timetabling

In this PhD project you will develop mathematical models and simulation‑optimization tools to design timetables that minimise delay propagation and improve performance of the Swiss railway network.

Job description
  • Establish and use mathematical models for large-scale timetabling scheduling, incorporating constraints on vehicles, crew and infrastructure, and optimizing buffer placement.
  • Design and implement a simulation‑optimization framework to evaluate tentative solutions, considering estimated delay dynamics and possible rescheduling degrees, and to improve robustness against small and large delays.
  • Quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of the suggested decisions, estimate their sensitivity to assumptions and compare them with typical real‑world reactions.
Profile

Ideally, you have or will receive a Master’s degree in transport sciences, management/decision sciences, econometrics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics or related fields. Your research track should demonstrate a track record or clear potential for analysing, modelling, control and optimisation of transport systems. You are highly motivated, self‑driven and possess a clear research vision, academic ambition, and excellent communication and writing skills.

Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory.

  • Computer science background and ability to program complex software independently.
  • Experience modelling and working with algorithmic design, existing software and data provided by industrial partners.
  • Knowledge of mathematical optimisation (MILP, IP, LP) and/or control sciences.
  • Team‑working and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of German or a similar language is a plus.
We offer
  • Dynamic research environment at ETH Zurich with international collaborators.
  • Active interaction with industrial partners and the Complex Systems group at Utrecht University.
  • Access to ETH’s extensive training program, public transport season tickets, car sharing, sports facilities, childcare and pension benefits.
