Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Doctoral Student Range shifts of mountain plants 100%
Location: Zürich

The Plant Ecology Group at ETH Zürich is seeking a doctoral student to investigate why mountain plant species are not able to shift their ranges fast enough to keep pace with climate change. The successful candidate will conduct field transplant and greenhouse experiments, collect data, and statistically analyse ecological variables related to plant demography and long‑distance seed dispersal by animals. Work will be performed in parallel with a sister study in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and in collaboration with international partners in the Mountain Invasion Research Network.

Responsibilities
  • Design, set‑up, and run field transplant and greenhouse experiments.
  • Collect and statistically analyse ecological data to quantify plant demography and long‑distance seed dispersal by animals.
  • Develop independent research questions within the broader project theme.
  • Contribute to teaching, outreach, laboratory work, and other tasks within the research group and department.
  • Collaborate with partners at the University of Zürich, WSL, EAWAG, and the McGill University team.
Qualifications
  • MSc in ecology or a related field.
  • High self‑motivation and effective time management.
  • Commitment to a collegial and inclusive workplace.
  • Proven skills in statistical modelling (e.g., mixed models, R programming) and scientific writing.
  • Experience conducting ecological research in field and greenhouse settings.
  • Familiarity with plant identification, propagation, and trait measurements.
  • High level of English proficiency (oral and written).
  • Professionalism and academic integrity.
  • Valid driver’s licence and ability to drive on steep mountain roads.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion and welcome applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
