Opportunity

We are looking for a Reinforcement Learning for Robotic Navigation intern to join our Advanced Technology team and contribute to advancing ANYmal’s mobility capabilities. Utilizing the latest reinforcement learning techniques and simulation tools, we define, train, and integrate ML models into ANYmal to safely and robustly navigate challenging industrial environments.

Your role includes evaluating and fine‑tuning state‑of‑the‑art RL‑based navigation & locomotion policies in simulation and on real quadruped robots. This internship provides a profound and impactful opportunity to work at the forefront of machine learning in robotics, playing a significant role in shaping ANYmal’s autonomous capabilities and contributing to real‑world applications.

You will work closely with Robotics experts and research partners who will provide you with guidance and mentorship. The preferred starting date is September 2026
, and the full‑time paid internship lasts six months.

Your Contributions
  • Project Support: Work closely with our engineers and researchers on active projects across the entire software stack, from application software to autonomy stack and low‑level software.
  • Algorithm Implementation: Design, implement, test, and validate new algorithms and features in core software areas.
  • Testing & Infrastructure: Contribute to the continuous improvement of our testing infrastructure, simulation environments, and CI/CD pipelines to ensure the robustness and reliability of the ANYmal platform.
  • Code Development & Testing: Write clean, efficient, and well‑documented C++ and Python code for real‑time operation on the robot. Contribute to our robust testing and simulation infrastructure.
Your Profile
  • Education: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD program in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
  • Foundational Knowledge: Solid academic knowledge and proven ability in one or more areas relevant to mobile robotics, such as Control Theory, Machine Learning, Computer Vision.
  • Programming

    Skills:

    Strong proficiency in Python and/or C++ (Modern C++ is highly valued).
  • Software Development

    Skills:

    Experience with Git, Docker, and AI‑assisted software development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, Git Hub Copilot).
  • Collaboration: Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in our highly interdisciplinary, English‑speaking environment.
  • Attitude: A hands‑on, proactive, and analytical attitude towards complex problem‑solving and eagerness to learn rapidly.
Bonus points, a few extra things that would make us especially excited about your application
  • You have trained AI models on GPUs and have explored CUDA or other GPU‑accelerated computing frameworks.
  • You spend your weekends automating your workflows with Agentic AI.
  • You know and worked with Robotics Middleware (ROS/ROS 2).
