Hua Hsia Chinese School offers year-round & summer Mandarin Chinese language courses for children & adults of all levels. Our Chinese language schools are situated in Southgate in Enfield (next to East Barnet), and in Hampstead in the borough of Camden in North Central London (3 minutes from Finchley Road tube station). Both schools are easily accessible by public transport. Hua Hsia Chinese School is organising our annual Chinese Culture Easter Camp in Hampstead (3/4 to 6/4) and Southgate (9/4 to 13/4).
Mandarin Chinese Classes in North London:
Our ongoing courses help learners to build up the language knowledge step by step through fun activities (e.g. language games, singing, dancing, painting, and more).

Nursery Chinese Classes (Ages 3-4)
Young children will be immersed in a rich environment of Chinese Language learning.
Through games and nursery rhymes that are all delivered through Chinese, children will naturally get a basic grasp of conversation and simple rhymes - and have lots of fun!
Foundation Chinese Classes (Ages 4-5)
The Foundation course is designed for children who have progressed from Nursery Class or are not previously familiar to the Chinese language.
Young children will learn basic Pinyin (symbols for Chinese pronunciation), daily conversation and start to recognise simple Chinese characters.
Children will learn from pictures, flashcards, Chinese songs and lots of different media. By the completion of this course, children will be able to introduce themselves, and say their name, age, favourite food and hobbies.
Year 1 Chinese Classes (Ages 5-6)
The Year 1 course is designed for children who have progressed from Foundation Class or are not previously familiar to the Chinese language. Children will continue to develop their language skills and experience of Chinese culture.
Students will learn Pinyin, basic vocabulary, phrases and dialogues with characters and situations relevant to their daily lives. Students will also be introduced the concept of radicals and the components of Chinese characters.
Year 2 & 3 Chinese Classes (Ages 6-8)
Designed for children who have progressed from Year 1 or have the basic communication skills in Chinese.
Students will learn basic vocabulary, phrases and dialogue with characters and situations relevant to their daily lives, furthermore they will start to type Chinese with a computer and write Chinese characters. Students will learn Chinese with ICT technology.
The Year 3 course is designed for children who have progressed from Year 2 or have the basic communication and writing skills in Chinese.
Children will expand their knowledge of frequently used Chinese characters, phrases and basic sentences. They will practice all the skills - listening, speaking, reading, typing and writing. Students will learn Chinese with ICT technology.
Year 4 Chinese Classes (Ages 8-10)
Designed for children who have progressed from Year 3 or passed the tutor assessment. This course is suitable for students in Upper Primary or Lower Secondary School. Children’s vocabulary and sentence patterns will be expanded.
Students will learn Chinese with ICT technology. By the end of Year 4, they should be able to write short sentences and a simple letter, as well as learning to write a total of 100 characters and recognise 240 characters and phrases.
Year 5 & Year 6 Chinese Classes (Ages 10-11)
The Year 5 & Year 6 course is designed for students who have progressed from Year 4 or passed the tutor assessment. Student will build on and expand their previous skills and vocabulary learned in Year 4.
Students will learn Chinese with ICT technology. By the end of Year 5, they should be able to write a short paragraph, as well as learning to write a total of 150 characters and recognise 360 characters and phrases.
GCSE / Pre-University Courses:
• GCSE Course
The course is scheduled in the autumn term focusing on the different GCSE papers where the students will be given the opportunity to revise and practice the different skills in preparation for the exam in June. Both private tuition and small groups are available for this course.
• Cambridge Pre-U Course
We have decided to offer the Cambridge Pre U course this year, as the progression from our GCSE course.
Cambridge Pre U is now gaining popularity within secondary schools and many universities have recognised it as a qualification – The degree is now accepted by approximately 111 universities in the UK and all Ivy league universities in the US.
After-School Clubs for Primary & Secondary School students
Our ‘After-school club’ Mandarin learning program offers a fun-based Mandarin learning opportunity to local school students at both primary and secondary level.
It can be arranged during the breakfast club, lunchtime, after school club or any time to fit the school schedule.
Chinese Summer & Easter Camps (Ages 3+)
Hua Hsia offers fantastic week-long Chinese activity and culture camps for children ages 3 and Up.
Our camps aim to use innovative teaching methods and fun activities to generate children’s interests in learning Chinese.
Topics and lessons include: Brush painting, Calligraphy, Chinese Arts & Crafts, Chinese Cookery course, Rhymes and Songs etc.
Chinese Culture Courses
To help our students and parents understand more about China, we run weekly culture courses focused on specific aspects of traditional Chinese culture, such as Chinese Tai Chi, painting and calligraphy.
Private Chinese Lessons
Available for children, teenagers and adults, our one-on-one Chinese tuition is the most effective way to learn the language quickly.
Our qualified and experienced tutors can come to your home, office or other location of your choice, at times that best suit you. Private Chinese lessons are ideal for GCSE or A-level students who need a flexible study schedule.
Abacus Mental Math Class - for children ages 5-11:
Using an abacus can help to speed up mental maths and problem solving. Used in Asia since ancient times, the abacus or soroban, is now widely used throughout Asian schools as an aid to faster mental calculation.
Hua Hsia provides weekly classes in the use of the soroban that are fun and help to boost your child's confidence.
In addition, learning to use an abacus can improve children’s listening, concentration, memory capacity, speed and even imagination skills!
We also conduct Abacus Grading Test to monitor and record students’ achievement of abacus learning.
Adult Mandarin Chinese Classes
Both private tuition and small groups are available for this course. Students will be placed into the right classes after initial assessment.
• Adult - Beginners
Suitable for adults who have no prior knowledge of the language and are interested in learning Mandarin Chinese.
• Adult - Lower Intermediate Level
For adults who have either completed 2-year courses or have at least 80 hours of learning experience. By the end of these two stages, students should have covered enough ground to be able to cope with many everyday needs in a Chinese-speaking environment. At this point, you can either seek externally-validated qualifications, or move to a conversation course.
• Adult - Advanced Level
This course is suitable for adults with a minimum vocabulary of 1000 Mandarin characters. Students are supposed to have good skills in conversation, reading and writing. In this course, the vocabulary and sentences will be expanded with discussion on a range of topics.
