Occupational Health and Return-to-Work Advisor

As a senior professional within the Human Resources Branch (HR), the Occupational Health and Return-to-Work Advisor provides expert advice and support on occupational health, disability management, and return-to-work programs within a policing environment.
The role focuses on supporting sworn and civilian police personnel to safely and sustainably remain at or return to work, while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, collective agreements, and organizational policies.
- Provide professional advice and guidance on complex occupational health, disability, and return-to-work cases for sworn and civilian police personnel.
- Interpret medical information and functional abilities to assess fitness for duty and identify appropriate workplace accommodations.
- Develop, implement, and monitor early and graduated return-to-work plans in collaboration with employees, managers, healthcare providers, and unions.
- Advise managers on employment limitations, restrictions, and their impact on operational role requirements.
- Apply knowledge of the physical and psychological demands of policing to support safe work placement and sustainable return-to-work outcomes.
- Coordinate workplace accommodations in compliance with duty to accommodate principles and human rights legislation.
- Liaise with external stakeholders including medical practitioners, WorkSafeBC, rehabilitation providers, and insurers.
- Maintain accurate documentation in compliance with privacy, confidentiality, and organizational standards.
- Advise managers and employees on occupational health, wellness, and return-to-work best practices.
- Coordinate ergonomic assessments and implement recommendations to support employee safety.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of occupational health, wellness, and return-to-work programs.
- Maintain physical and mental occupational demands analyses to support functional and occupational assessments.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of HR policies, procedures, and learning initiatives in the areas of disability and extended absence management.
- Act as Manager, HR as required.
Candidates must have a degree in occupational health, rehabilitation, disability management, human resources, or a related field, along with a minimum of 5 years of experience in disability or health services case management and return-to-work coordination. Experience with in a public safety or unionized environment is preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of the Workers’ Compensation Act, Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, applicable human rights and health privacy legislation, and duty to accommodate obligations is required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
You are a skilled critical thinker who approaches complex workplace health and return-to-work cases with thoughtful analysis and sound judgment, communicating with tact and diplomacy, ensuring alignment and understanding among all stakeholders. You are highly relational in your approach, creating respectful and professional environments, while upholding policies and expectations in navigating sensitive situations.
