Qualifications
  • Valid Washington State Secondary teaching certificate and appropriate endorsement.
  • English Language Learner Endorsement or proof of enrollment in a Washington State approved ELL program.
  • Knowledge of current ELD curriculum and instructional practices.
  • Knowledge of current classroom management techniques and ability to apply strategies to provide a productive learning environment.
  • Ability and skills necessary to individualize ELD instruction.
  • Commitment and ability to plan and work with a full range of multilingual learners including gifted, mainstreamed special education, and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with technology to develop students’ technical literacy and to assist students in learning other subjects.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative or team approach.
  • Maintain high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with students and parents in their primary language.
  • Ability to work with students in multi‑aged groups.
  • Ability to use varied assessments, including performance tasks, portfolios and student self‑assessment.
  • Ongoing professional development activities, such as college coursework, professional associations, workshops and in services.
  • A strong and positive attitude that each student can learn and has the right and capacity to achieve personal academic excellence.
  • Knowledge/experience with state assessment and English‑Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA).
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.
  • Knowledge of state standards and English Language Proficiency Standards.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Foster an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of assigned multilingual learners.
  • Plan an instructional program designed to meet individual multilingual learner student needs and whole groups; prepare lesson plans.
  • Use necessary and appropriate ELD instructional methods and materials, which are suited to the wellbeing of the students to the nature of the learning activities, program and/or curriculum involved, including integration of technology.
  • Develop and facilitate ELD professional development for school‑based leadership teams and other stakeholders.
  • Support school communities in the implementation of evidence‑based practices and programs to improve learning and performance of ELL students.
  • Work cooperatively with administration and staff to develop and implement an effective ELD instructional program and activities.
  • Attend in‑service training and continue professional growth through study and experimentation to remain current in methods and techniques for effective ELD instruction.
  • Establish and implement, in a positive and supportive manner, classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior and conduct to provide a productive learning environment.
  • Provide guidance, counseling and individualized support to students to meet standards of achievement, and English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPA).
  • Make referrals for assistance where appropriate.
