Experimental Fabrication SME II
The DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Army Research Directorate conducts foundational experimental research at several experimental facilities to guide the development of lethality technologies and supports the acquisition community. This role requires senior fabrication experience and leadership in experimental fabrication.
Responsibilities- Independently fabricate and assemble a wide variety of complex, non-standard experimental prototypes, structures, and fixtures in coordination with ARL research engineers.
- Design, fabricate, and machine components using specialized equipment such as CNC fixed and sliding headstock lathes, wire-plunge EDM, CNC grinders, and CNC mills.
- Mentor junior experimental fabrication technicians.
- Recommend and implement facility improvements to enable state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and use proper protective gear or equipment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Applied Sciences.
- 5years of experience in technology design and development of hardware systems or subsystems.
- 2years of experience designing, developing, and testing in RDT&E directly related to the PWS (a higher degree may substitute for years of experience).
- Extensive experience in advanced fabrication and machining techniques, including the use of specialized equipment for precise component and assembly prototype manufacturing.
- Expertise in developing and using CAD/CAM software to build precise parts.
- Experience in fabricating small-arms weapon components, fixtures, and axis-symmetric components.
- Ability to conceive and develop new approaches to improve part quality.
- Pass all required training deemed necessary by the ARL safety office and facility manager, including familiarity with SOPs for every site within the branch.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift objects up to 50pounds.
- Work involves prolonged walking, standing, bending, or stooping.
- Occasional outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to machine and handle depleted uranium while following applicable safety standards developed jointly with the Radiation Safety Officer.
Ability to obtain a Secret clearance is required.

Work HoursFull-time (40hours/week).
