Position: Detention Officer I

Job Title

This position provides supervision and care for juveniles detained in a detention facility in a judicial district of the Superior Court.

Essential Duties

The key responsibilities include:

Monitoring the work performance of Relief staff and volunteers, if necessary.

Administering the food and laundry service on assigned shift.

Conferring with Detention Officer II and/or shift supervisor to relate immediate need for supplies or procedural review.

Directing the securing of all data gathered during intake process and distributing detainee clothing during intake.

Completing all paperwork necessary for intake and as related to release.

Demonstrating ability to interact in a positive manner while monitoring juveniles in the detention setting, during mealtimes, and recreation periods.

Operating manual control board while responding appropriately to incoming phone calls, detainee needs, and visitation.

Exercising defined discipline standards relating to minor and major juvenile infractions per policy manual.

Acting as liaison between volunteers, relief staff, and the Director of Detention.

May operate JUVIS computer in the form of daily detention reports and may supervise or perform fingerprint process as needed upon intake.

Performing other assigned tasks as requested by Detention Officer II, III or the Director of Detention.

Qualifications

The required qualifications are:

At least six months experience in related field (e.g. education, human services, law enforcement).

Successful completion of Detention Workers Academy within six (6) months of employment.

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Valid Washington State Driver's License.

Grays Harbor County pays entire medical, dental and vision for full time employees and provides up to $800 monthly towards dependent coverage for Courthouse Contract employees and $950 per month for Public Works Contract employees. Benefits are pro-rated for part-time employees.
