About Prison Facilities

The Washington legislature has established a comprehensive system of corrections for convicted law violators within the state of Washington to accomplish a primary objective of ensuring public safety. The system is designed and managed to provide the maximum feasible safety for the persons and property of the general public, the staff, and the inmates (RCW 72.09.010). The Department of Corrections has 11 prison facilities with custody levels ranging from minimum to maximum security.

  • Corrections & Custody Officer 1 (TEAMSTERS Range 45 Step J-M) – Full‑time: $6,046 – $6,512 Monthly
    On‑call/Hourly: $34.75 – $37.43
  • Corrections & Custody Officer 2 (TEAMSTERS Range 48 Step H-M) – Full‑time: $6,200 – $7,013 Monthly
    On‑call/Hourly: $35.63 – $40.30
Qualifications for Corrections and Custody Officer 2 (CO2)
  • One year of experience as a Department of Corrections Corrections and Custody Officer, which includes successful completion of the CORE Academy and the Correctional Officer Field Training Program.
  • One year of experience as a Correctional Officer in adult or juvenile corrections where security functions equivalent to a DOC Corrections and Security Officer 2 were performed.
On‑Call Positions

On‑call staff may work an average of 32–40 hours per week, though no minimum hour guarantee exists. Incumbents will attend six weeks of full‑time paid training immediately upon hire and will be considered for full‑time permanent and/or temporary vacancies as they occur. All correctional officers, including those in on‑call positions, receive a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, retirement, paid sick leave, holiday pay, and paid vacation, provided they work at least 20 hours per week.

Stafford Creek Corrections Center (SCCC)

The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated individuals for the positions of Correctional Officer 1 and/or 2 at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center in Aberdeen, WA. SCCC is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The on‑call/intermittent positions have no minimum hour guarantee.

Custody Level: Maximum, Medium and Long‑Term Minimum

Stafford Creek Corrections Center is a 1,936‑bed multi‑custody facility on a 210‑acre site. Construction started in July 1998 and the facility opened April 3, 2000. It is one of Washington State’s newest prisons and operates around sustainable practices that reduce recidivism while enhancing security for the facility and safety for communities.

Training and Career Development

This job class is designated as in‑training. Employees will advance to CO2 after satisfactory completion of the CO1 training requirements. Correctional Officers provide safety and security, assist in controlling, directing, and monitoring the activities of incarcerated individuals, and maintain security in accordance with established department methods and procedures. They are expected to be positive role models and help inmates become productive members of society.

Overtime is an essential function. All correctional workers complete the six‑week Correctional Worker Core (CWC) academy and receive ongoing on‑the‑job training.
