Job Description

Abilene Schools USD 435 is looking for a High School Assistant Principal to serve Abilene (Kansas) High School. The assistant principal will be a valued member of the district's administrative leadership team, working closely with the high school principal, high school staff, district office leaders, and the board of education. He/she will help maintain a positive climate for students and staff in AHS.

Primary

Responsibilities
  • Assisting the principal with teacher and support staff evaluation processes.
  • Communicating with families.
  • Event supervision as needed.
  • Overseeing co‑curricular organizations (FFA, FCCLA, FBLA, HOSA, clubs, etc.).
  • Discipline oversight for approximately 75% of the students.
  • Assisting with staff support.
  • Oversight of special student events.
  • Submitting monthly reports to the Board of Education.
  • Communicating clearly in speech and writing.
  • Holding building‑level licensure (required).
Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership.
  • Five years or more teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of best practices in teaching.
Essential Functions
  • Ability to make administrative decisions for all activities.
  • Work to build personal connections with all students and staff.
  • Provide direction for all program sponsors through timely completion of the annual evaluation process.
  • Provide instructional direction for several teachers of the building while ensuring fidelity to district‑established processes.
  • Participate in and possibly facilitate discussions pertaining to building and activity programs.
  • Address student discipline issues through district and legal protocols.
  • Monitor implementation of instructional and program resources.
  • Assist with developing parameters and expectations for pursuing the district vision.
  • Assist the High School Principal in organizing all staff communication.
  • Assist in recruitment, selection, and assignment of program sponsors.
  • Assume a leadership role for the building’s public‑relations events and communications.
  • Support programs as requested by the principal or district administration (including accreditation, classroom instruction, evaluation processes, and fulfillment of district commitments to excellence).
Physical Requirements /Environmental Conditions
  • Requires prolonged sitting, standing, and use of equipment including repetitive motions and computer eye fatigue.
  • Must occasionally work in noisy and crowded environments with numerous interruptions.
  • Requires a high level of body control to complete and maintain Mandt certification.
General Responsibilities
  • Facilitate professional learning and monitor licensure considerations.
  • Facilitate student discipline measures as needed.
  • Assist with teacher induction process.
  • Assume a leadership role in maintaining Boys Town Social Skills certifications.
  • Facilitate and/or participate in hiring for teachers, support staff, and program sponsors.
  • Conduct teacher and support staff evaluations.
  • Understand compliance considerations.
  • Support data‑based decision making with teachers and instructional leaders.
  • Provide direction for staff, teachers, students, and families.
  • Be a positive representative of the school district throughout the community.
