Street Maintenance Worker I
Position SummaryThe City of Abilene Public Works Department is accepting applications for a full-time Street Maintenance Worker, 40 hours a week, with the potential for intermittent overtime. The role involves performing semi-skilled and unskilled labor in the repairs and maintenance of streets, signs, flood control, and storm drains. A strong mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn quickly are required.
Essential Job Functions- Performs street and curb maintenance procedures
- Safely and effectively operates departmental equipment
- Installs and replaces street signs and pavement markings
- Performs snow and ice control procedures
- Responds to emergency call‑outs
- Assists other divisions of Public Works as needed
- Assists other departments as the need arises
- Assists with repairs to water and sewer lines
• Entry-level position; no prior experience required, but preferred.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Valid Kansas Driver's License required.
• Ability and willingness to learn about equipment maintenance and construction materials.
• Operates trucks, hand tools, small-motorized equipment, and other departmental equipment.
• Reads and interprets written instructions; possesses effective oral and written communication skills.
Adverse working conditions present. Exposure to hazardous chemicals expected. Duties may be performed in all types of weather.
Physical AbilitiesManual labor including lifting and carrying heavy material, pushing, pulling, and operating departmental equipment required.
