Position:
Transportation Director

Location:

Abilene, Kansas

Employment Type:

Full‑Time

Classified, exempt, 12‑month position with full‑time schedule. Minimum 8 hours per day.

The Director will maintain a safe transportation system and coordinate bus drivers’ assignments, schedules, routes, activity trips, and vehicle maintenance to provide efficient pupil transportation services.

Will work closely with the district’s Athletic Director, building administrators, superintendent, board clerk, and bus drivers to provide quality transportation for district activities.

Typical work hours are 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for morning routes and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for afternoon routes, with non‑typical hours as needed for coordination, documentation, fleet maintenance, weather considerations, and emergencies.

Summer work hours align with the District Office schedule.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Post‑secondary training preferred.
  • Class B CDL with passenger endorsement, first aid, and defensive driving.
  • Basic vehicle maintenance knowledge.
  • Computer experience, knowledge of Microsoft programs.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Health and inoculation certificate (filed upon hire).
  • Desire to continue career improvement.
Essential Functions
  • Efficiently operate the transportation department.
  • Ensure all activities conform to district guidelines.
  • Communicate and work effectively with district members and community.
  • React to change and interruptions productively.
  • Operate vehicles, equipment, and software appropriately.
  • Implement the district’s vision and mission.
  • Schedule appointments, travel arrangements, and meeting materials to keep activities running smoothly.
  • Organize and conduct school transportation safety meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and staff information.
Physical Requirements / Environmental Conditions
  • Extended sitting, standing, stooping, bending, turning, reaching; repetitive motions and computer eye fatigue.
  • Manual handling of heavy objects (lift 35‑50 lbs).
  • Indoor and outdoor work year‑round, in dust, fumes, odors.
  • Occasional noise and crowded environment.
  • Handle multiple tasks efficiently.
General Responsibilities

Organization and Communication

  • Schedule and evaluate transportation routes; communicate routes to parents, drivers, and administration.
  • Schedule extracurricular transportation; ensure safe routing and stopping points.
  • Assign activity trips to drivers; process parent concerns.
  • Enter bus rider information into the School Information System.
  • Hire and evaluate transportation staff.

Safety Considerations

  • Communicate discipline problems to administrators; oversee emergency bus evacuation.
  • Address emergency situations (lost children, broken‑down buses).
  • Schedule CPR, First Aid, and defensive driving training.
  • Know state regulations and enforce them.
  • Review driver records to ensure state requirements are met.
  • Plan and conduct safety meetings; participate in state Highway Patrol inspections.
  • Organize records for state audits.

Fleet Maintenance

  • Perform minor repairs (lights, belts); change oil, grease, rotate tires.
  • Oversee maintenance schedules and repairs.
  • Clean vehicles, fuel for trips, ensure mechanical condition and tire tread.
  • Prepare vehicle purchase specifications; recommend capital expenditures.

General Tasks

  • Promote safety, health, and comfort of students and employees.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and efficiency.
  • Respond to emergencies; serve as substitute driver when needed.
  • Follow district policies; keep information confidential.
  • Stay current on new information and best practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
