GENERAL DESCRIPTIONUnder general supervision, perform a variety of skilled field inspections and office work involved in the enforcement of codes and regulations regarding building installations; to inspect new construction, remodeling, and repairs to determine compliance with the City's building code; to review plans and specifications to determine compliance with City codes; and to enforce City building codes.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIESPerform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of:- Building construction and installation methods, practices, and materials.
- Possible defects and faults in building construction and installation activities, and standard testing devices, methods, and corrective measures.
- International Building Codes.
- Safe driving principles and practices.
- Verbally and in writing communicate code violations.
- Operate a variety of tools and equipment used in building inspection work including ladder, screw driver etc.
- Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment.
- Safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Operate office equipment to include computer, scanner, fax, and copier.
- Learn applicable building codes.
- Understand and interpret codes, plans, and specifications.
- Detect and locate defective building installations and ascertain the stage of construction of installation when defects are most easily found and corrected.
- Enforce codes with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

- Experience:
Five (5) years of experience in structural construction, remodeling, and addition work to buildings. - Education/Training: A high school diploma or a GED is required.
- License or Certificate: A valid current valid driver's license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days, or a military waiver is required.
- Ability to obtain a building inspectors certification through ICC within eighteen (18) months of employment.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, and climb.
- With or without accommodation, ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.
- Ability to travel to different sites.
