Primary Function
The Field Service Technician I is an entry-level field technician responsible for performing basic electrical testing, maintenance, and commissioning activities on high-voltage substations and power systems under close supervision. This role focuses on developing foundational technical knowledge and safe work practices in an active field environment. The position will be based in our Abilene, TX office and will report to Dashiell’s Field Supervisor.
Duties & Responsibilities
Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:
Perform electrical testing and commissioning activities on high-voltage substations, switch gear, transformers, circuit breakers, and protective relay systems under close supervision.
Perform basic electrical testing under direct guidance, including insulation resistance testing, contact resistance testing, turns ratio testing, power factor testing, and circuit breaker timing tests.
Assist with protective relay testing and calibration using microprocessor-based relay test equipment Doble, Megger, Omicron).
Assist with testing and inspection of power apparatus including power transformers, current transformers, potential transformers, and medium- and high-voltage switch gear.
Support testing and maintenance of low-voltage AC/DC systems including station batteries, battery chargers, inverters, DC distribution panels, and AC distribution systems under direct supervision.
Support equipment start-ups and energization activities by preparing test equipment, running cables, and recording test data as directed.
Maintain accurate and organized test documentation, field notes, and equipment logs under supervision.
Follow all safety procedures and protocols, including proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and adherence to NFPA 70E and OSHA standards.
Assist in the setup and breakdown of testing equipment and work spaces at project sites.
Communicate testing status, observations, and any issues to the supervising technician or Field Supervisor promptly.
Participate in Job Safety Task Analyses (JSTAs) and safety briefings prior to work activities.
Support the maintenance and calibration of company test equipment and tools.
Develop technical knowledge through on-the-job training, mentorship, and self-directed study of industry standards and equipment manuals.
Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications / Experience
Required
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Technology, or a related technical field; equivalent field technician experience may be considered in lieu of a degree (2 years for Associate’s, 4 years for Bachelor’s).
Foundational knowledge of electrical systems through education or related exposure is expected.
Basic understanding of high-voltage electrical systems, substations, power apparatus, and power distribution equipment.
