Systems Engineer, Electrical Engineering
Job Description Summary
The Tendering System Application Engineer serves as the primary technical architect for complex power systems and advanced energy infrastructure As a technical lead within the Commercial Project Solutions team, you will serve as the architectural authority supporting grid electrification sales initiatives. This role bridges the gap between complex engineering and commercial tendering by providing expert technical validation, solution design, and cost estimation across DCS/SCADA, automation, protection and control, telecommunications, cybersecurity, and monitoring and diagnostics.
You will be instrumental in driving project success by translating customer needs into robust, integrated technical architectures-ensuring both technical viability and accurate project scoping-to differentiate our offerings and accelerate the sales process.
- Engineering Solutions Architecture:
Lead the technical definition of projects by defining the technical requirements and architecture for DCS/SCADA and automation schemes. You will translate client requirements into detailed technical specifications, including protection single-line diagrams, network architecture, and IED integration requirements, ensuring all proposed solutions are compliant with IEEE, IEC, and CSA standards. - Technical Bid Integration:
Serve as the technical lead throughout the tender lifecycle. You will evaluate complex customer RFQs to define precise technical scopes of work, performing performance and cost estimations that align technical solutions with customer requirements. Your technical oversight ensures that all project scopes and financial models are accurate, technically viable, and optimized for risk mitigation. - Protocol & System Interoperability:
Define the technical requirements for substation communication protocols, including DNP3 and IEC
61850. You will validate that the proposed system architecture is optimized for performance, reliability, and alignment with evolving cybersecurity standards. - Risk Mitigation & Documentation:
Utilize your analytical background to manage the technical Risk & Opportunity (R&O) register. By identifying and quantifying technical risks early in the pre-bid phase, you define necessary contingency allowances, protecting both the project's technical integrity and the commercial bottom line. - Stakeholder Technical Advocacy:
Act as the internal authority on system design, providing guidance to cross-functional teams. You will articulate the technical justification for your design choices, ensuring stakeholders understand how specific engineering design choices provide superior long‑term value to the customer.
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
- 3-5 years of experience in the design and architecture of protection & control schemes, SCADA systems, and substation automation.
- Technical Fluency:
Understanding of substation communication protocols (e.g. DNP3/IEC
61850) and IED/relay application principles. - Documentation
Skills:
Demonstrated proficiency in using Visio to produce conceptual engineering drawings, network architecture diagrams, and system layouts. - Analytical Rigor:
Capability to analyze technical specifications and translate them into actionable, efficient project execution strategies for the tender phase.
- Broad System Expertise:
Exposure to Microgrids, PMCS, EMS platforms, and Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards. - Commercial Awareness: A foundational understanding of how technical reliability and system efficiency directly influence project competitiveness and profitability.
- Collaborative Design Mindset:
Ability to partner with commercial and product engineering teams to solve complex problems, keeping the customer's end‑use case at the center of all technical decisions. - Communication:
Proven ability to synthesize complex technical challenges into clear, concise documentation and professional presentations.
