Position Summary
The VP of Operations is accountable for day‑to‑day operations and the financial well‑being of the organization. This role works with the executive team to develop and execute a strategic business plan, builds client and supplier relationships, supports sales, recruits a diverse workforce, inspires and retains operations staff, and ensures profitable results.
Roles and Responsibilities- Responsible for both project and regional‑level profit and loss
- Responsible for maintaining positive cash flow at both project and regional levels
- Assumes accountability for billings, including breaking down initial billing, preventing under billing, and ensuring timely collections with A/R and Legal
- Supports management of SG&A costs at the regional level
- Guides Operations Management in development, productivity, promotion, and financial aspects of projects and services
- Maintains an operational support organization plan, establishing policies and SOPs for management development and succession
- Performs post‑job customer satisfaction surveys and shares results with team members
- Identifies survey trends and implements action plans for improvement
- Regularly meets with subcontractors and suppliers at an executive level to assess performance and solicit feedback
- Ensures project schedules and logistics plans are developed and vetted for all bids
- Uses historical data to develop aggressive yet realistic production units for bids
- Regularly updates the historical database in collaboration with Pre‑Construction Management
- Ensures smooth transition and handoff of projects from Pre‑Construction to Operations teams
- Creates structures and processes to manage current activities and projected growth
- Ensures all activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations governing operations
- Forecasts hiring and staffing needs for operational positions and ensures those needs are met
- Accountable for compliance with prevailing wage requirements, Project Labor Agreements, workforce utilization, MBE/SBE participation, etc.
- Provides guidance, direction, coaching, and support to direct reports to maximize individual and department performance
- Holds timely performance appraisals and progress reviews for direct reports
- Assists direct reports and staff in developing short‑ and long‑term goals
- Ensures direct reports and staff receive appropriate training aligned with career development plans
- Collaborates with HR to ensure compliance with employment and labor laws and related company policies; may conduct training or workshops on compliance
- Master’s degree from a four‑year college or university and fifteen years of related experience, with at least ten years in a senior construction or supply‑chain management role or equivalent education‑experience combination
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point
- Basic understanding of construction software (Primavera, Timberline, Vista, etc.)
- Previous executive leadership experience required
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents, technical procedures, and government regulations (including financial reports, project financials, business unit financials)
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures
- Ability to identify, understand, and mitigate risks in contract language (indemnity clauses, safety, warranty, schedule delays, litigation, arbitration)
- Ability to communicate with all levels of coworkers including executive management
- Ability to communicate well with client executives
- Ability to develop and present presentation materials for meetings and company events
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as cost‑benefit analysis, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions
- Strong financial, insurance, and bonding knowledge of the company
- Ability to effectively present and sell market information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public
- Discerning skill (distinguish situations, gather information, draw conclusions, decide appropriate action)
- Able to clearly and quickly work through complex business and people issues at Department, Project, and senior levels
- Ability to understand and apply working knowledge of contracts, specifications, drawings, and scope of work
Salary starting at $225,000+ and negotiable based on experience.
