ABILENE, TX – Abilene State Supported Living Center, 2501 Maple St.

Licensed Vocational Nurse II (LVN II) – Day shift, with possible evening, night, weekend or overtime work. The position provides highly complex vocational nursing care for residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral issues. This role is part of the Campus Nursing Department of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

• Administer medications and treatments orally, rectally, internally, or by injection.
• Perform complex technical nursing procedures such as tracheostomy care, gastrostomy/jejunostomy care, wound care, breathing treatments, and other state‑regulated tasks.
• Collect specimens for laboratory work and conduct appropriate screening tests.
• Monitor residents’ weight, diet, feedings, vital signs, and health status following treatments and procedures.
• Document all treatments and observations accurately in the electronic health record or paper chart.
• Provide direction and on‑the‑job training to new LVNs and direct support staff.
• Assist Registered Nurses with protocol implementation, infection control, quality assurance, and therapeutic nursing programs.
• Respond to emergency situations and follow safety and infection control procedures.
• Travel up to 5% and be available for on‑call or rotating schedules as required.
• Perform other duties such as clinic or lab work, patient scheduling, and accompanying residents to off‑site activities that require nursing attendance.

• Knowledge of nursing care standards, procedures, and techniques for patient care.
• Knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment (e.g., CPR) and the ability to care for residents and staff in emergencies.
• Reasoning skills to identify problems and determine appropriate resolutions.
• Computer skills, including use of nursing software and electronic health records.
• Clinical skills in the care and treatment of patients with complex medical, mental health, and/or behavioral health issues.
• Communication skills to educate patients, instruct staff, and interact with families and colleagues.
• Maintaining current CPR certification and physical ability to perform CPR and other required procedures.

• Licensed as a Registered Vocational Nurse in Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
• Alternatively, a temporary permit to perform supervised nursing duties while awaiting licensure may be accepted.

• Graduation from an LVN program.
• Prior LVN employment experience preferred.
• Experience working or volunteering directly with persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities preferred.
• Experience using an electronic health record system preferred.
