GENERAL DESCRIPTIONUnder general supervision of the Assistant Director of Planning and Development Services, this position assists and performs a variety of skilled field inspections and office work involved in the enforcement of adopted building codes and regulations regarding electrical installations. The duties include inspecting new construction, remodeling, repairs, reviewing plans and specifications to ensure compliance with the City codes and City’s electrical code.
SUPERVISIONEXERCISED
The Inspector – Electrical Apprentice exercises no supervision. The Inspector – Electrical I exercises direct supervision over the Inspector – Electrical Apprentice. The Inspector – Electrical II exercises direct supervision over the Inspector – Electrical Apprentice and Inspector – Electrical I. The Inspector - Electrical III exercises direct supervision over the Inspector – Electrical Apprentice/I/II.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Inspector - Electrical Apprentice- Assist in the inspection of residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installations and equipment in structures undergoing construction, repair, or remodeling for compliance with City and National electrical codes and safety standards, issue appropriate permits.
- Assist with the check of plans and specifications for compliance with current adopted City and National electrical codes.
- Assist the enforcement of the adopted City Electrical Code. Identify areas of non-compliance and discuss problems with homeowners and contractors/developers. Identify ways of correcting deficiencies.
- Assist in the issuance of stop work orders.
- Assist in the inspection of work sites to ensure that contractors and workers have appropriate licenses, and that proper materials and practices are utilized.
- Assist in evaluating buildings considered for rehabilitation or demolition and assess electrical installations at the property owner’s request to ensure compliance with code and life safety compliance.
- Assist in the preparation of detailed inspection reports and review permit applications.
- Receive telephone calls from contractors and homeowners.
- Receive and process inspection requests.
- Operate a city vehicle to travel to and from various job sites.
- Inspect residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installations and equipment in structures undergoing construction, repair, or remodeling for compliance with City and National electrical codes and safety standards.
- Check plans and specifications for compliance with current adopted City and National electrical codes for residential.
- Assist Inspector – Electrical II in checking plans and codes for commercial projects.
- Enforce adopted City Electrical Codes.
- Issue stop work orders.
- Inspect work sites to ensure that contractors and workers have appropriate licenses, and that proper materials and practices are utilized.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports and review permit applications.
- Write permits per approved applications.
- Enter daily inspections into the building inspections software program.
- Provide site supervision of other Inspector – Electrical employees in the absence of the Assistant Director of Planning and Development Services.
- Serve as an advisor to the Electrical Sub-Committee.
- Assist t he A ssistant B uilding O fficial in determining approval for alternate methods and materials.
- Hold classes for stakeholders to educate new codes adopted by the city and inform of minor and major changes.
- Assist the Assistant Building Official on researching current house bills and legislation that affect the construction industry in our area.
- Investigate fire damage structures and assist the owner/contractor on repair requirements.
Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
