General DescriptionUnder direct supervision of the Supervisor III - Parks, this position involves performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance and repair of park buildings, amenities, and facilities. Duties include carpentry, masonry, painting, playground inspections and repairs, assisting with construction projects, locksmithing, and performing minor plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work to ensure the safety and functionality of park infrastructure.
SupervisionExercised
The Building Maintenance Specialist I position exercises no supervision.
The Building Maintenance Specialist II/III position may perform as a lead worker providing technical and functional supervision to the Building Maintenance Specialist I/II.
Important and Essential DutiesOperates a City of Abilene vehicle and other various types and sizes of equipment such as tractors, ditchers, front loaders, backhoes and lift buckets during building maintenance tasks in restrooms and all city park facilities
Construct and install items like cabinets, shelves, counters, and perform remodeling (e.g., moving walls, laying carpet, installing floor and ceiling tiles).
Handle minor carpentry, glass replacement, and locksmith tasks.
Assist with electrical, plumbing, HVAC
Perform concrete and masonry work.
Gather estimates and cost information for materials.
Follow city policies and safety procedures while operating city vehicles and equipment.
Other Job Related DutiesAssist with electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.
Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge ofPlumbing repairs (leaks, clogs, drainage issues).
Standard carpentry, plumbing, and building maintenance techniques.
Commercial maintenance practices and trade-specific tools.
Locksmith maintenance and rekeying processes.
Skill toOperate and maintain a variety of tools, including saws, drills, grinders, and power hand tools.
Safely operate motor vehicles and equipment.
Use office equipment, including computers and work order software.
Ability toFollow and carry out proper safety procedures while performing work related duties.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training GuidelinesFor positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:
Building Maintenance Specialist I – ParksOne (1) year of experience in building and facilities is preferred.
Education/TrainingHigh school diploma or GED is required.
License or CertificateA valid Texas driver’s license or a military waiver is required.
Building Maintenance Specialist II – ParksThree (3) years of experience in building and facilities maintenance is preferred.
License or CertificateA CPSI certification is required.
Building Maintenance Specialist III – ParksFive (5) years of experience in building and facilities maintenance is preferred.
License or Certificate
A certification in Project Management is required.
Special RequirementsEssential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Bloodborne Pathogens training and Haz Com training are required within sixty (60) days of employment.
Walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.
Exposure to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution such as those encountered in general outdoor working conditions.
Working near moving and/or heavy traffic.
