Job Summary
A Splicing Apprentice works with direct supervision and guidance from a Senior Level Splicer. Duties include splicing, testing, and troubleshooting fiber optic cable. Entry-level splicers are new to the telecommunications field, hold no certifications, and are willing to accept direction and feedback from advanced classifiers. These apprentices learn to read prints, understand the fiber optic color code, and splice and test fiber cable in various environments (underground and aerial).
The role requires willingness to travel out of state and a 21 on /10 off rotational schedule.
- Maintain a clean, neat, professional appearance.
- Help load and unload daily supplies and equipment on and off company vehicles.
- Work with hand tools and perform a wide variety of hands‑on tasks related to the fiber optic network.
- Use basic hand tools properly.
- Act professionally and courteously in all customer interactions.
- Maintain a professional attitude with co‑workers and customers, adhering to safety practices and procedures.
- Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Handle company assets with care to avoid breakage, misuse, theft, etc.
- Complete and submit basic paperwork (timecards, material forms, etc.) according to company policies.
- Adhere to and promote AFL Telecom’s Environmental, Health & Safety policies.
- Attend training sessions requested by AFL management to obtain and maintain certifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Management.

- Finger, wrist dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
- Ability to work from heights (ladders, bucket trucks, man lifts, scissor lifts, rooftops) with proper fall protection.
- Use of small hand tools.
- Use of power tools.
- Use of color code for fiber/wiring.
- Climbing stairs, ladders, and/or scaffolds.
- Walk, stand, bend, lift up to 50 lbs., and drive a vehicle.
- Work in indoor/outdoor environments under varying conditions.
- Periodic assignments requiring travel away from local district office based on client, business, and project needs.
- Exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, solvents, and mechanical, electrical hazards.
- General hours Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; ability to provide support during and outside regular business hours is required.
- Must be able to work in the United States.
