Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Field/Service Technician
DACON, the construction business unit of Dashiell Corporation, an operating company of Quanta Services, specializes in medium- and high-voltage electrical infrastructure, delivering services across substations and power systems for electric utilities, power generation, industrial, petrochemical, and renewable energy clients.
The position is a field-based, on-call Heavy Equipment Mechanic supporting West Texas operations in the Permian Basin and surrounding areas. The role will report to Dacon’s Equipment Maintenance Supervisor and involves inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing a diverse fleet of trucks, trailers, and heavy construction equipment across active job sites.
Primary FunctionA self‑directed, safety‑conscious pilot who works independently in remote and demanding environments.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesRespond to field dispatch calls for equipment breakdowns, malfunctions, or scheduled maintenance across West Texas job sites.
Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems on heavy equipment including excavators, cranes, aerial lifts, digger derricks, bucket trucks, service trucks, and fleet vehicles.
Perform preventive maintenance on all assigned fleet equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company schedules.
Conduct thorough pre‑ and post‑repair inspections to ensure equipment is safe and roadworthy before returning to service.
Accurately document all maintenance, repairs, and parts used in the fleet management system.
Coordinate with site supervisors and the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor to prioritize and schedule repairs to minimize downtime.
Maintain a service vehicle stocked with appropriate tools, parts, and supplies for field repairs.
Identify warranty repair opportunities and coordinate with vendors or dealers as appropriate.
Comply with all OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards at all times.
Assist in the evaluation of equipment condition for repair‑vs‑replace decisions.
Communicate proactively with supervisors regarding repair status, parts needs, and estimated return‑to‑service timelines.
Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.
Keep critical construction equipment operational, directly supporting project timelines and reducing costly downtime across West Texas job sites.
Serve as the first line of defense in the field, enabling crews to stay productive through rapid, reliable mechanical response.
Protect the company’s investment in fleet assets through disciplined preventive maintenance and accurate documentation.
Contribute to a strong safety culture by ensuring every piece of equipment returned to service meets the highest standards.
Support Dacon’s reputation for operational excellence by maintaining equipment readiness across remote and demanding environments.
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a heavy equipment or fleet mechanic in a construction, utility, or industrial environment.
Demonstrated proficiency in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and drivetrain components.
Ability to read and interpret mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical schematics and technical manuals.
Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean MVR.
Current DOT medical card.
Must be available for on‑call dispatch, including nights and weekends as needed.
Must supply own hand tools appropriate for the trade.
Ability to pass a pre‑employment background check and drug screen.
Experience working on utility or T&D construction equipment (aerial devices, digger derricks, cable plows, etc.).
ASE or manufacturer certifications (e.g., Caterpillar, John Deere, Manitowoc, Altec, Terex).
NCCCO or relevant equipment certification.
Welding and fabrication skills (MIG/stick).
Prior experience in electric utility construction or T&D environments.
Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
Must work outdoors in extreme West Texas weather conditions, including high heat, wind, and dust.
