About Us
Thornton's Tree Service has been serving Abilene and the surrounding area since 1991. We're a family-owned business offering tree removal, trimming, stump grinding, crane services, and dumpster rental. Our equipment works hard every day, and we need a mechanic who can keep it running.
The JobWe're looking for an experienced mechanic to maintain and repair our full fleet of trucks and heavy equipment. This is a hands‑on role — you'll be diagnosing problems, doing repairs, and keeping preventive maintenance on schedule so crews aren't stuck waiting on broken‑down machines.
Equipment You'll Work On- Chip trucks.
- Wood chippers.
- Stump grinders.
- Boom truck cranes.
- Mini skid steers.
- Full-size skid steers.
- L28 articulating loaders.
- Rolloff/dumpster trucks.
- Other support vehicles and equipment as needed.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine issues across a variety of equipment types.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance (oil changes, fluid checks, greasing, filter changes, etc.).
- Repair or replace worn/damaged parts (engines, hydraulics, brakes, transmissions, etc.).
- Weld and fabricate repairs as needed.
- Keep accurate maintenance logs and repair records.
- Order parts and manage inventory of common wear items.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns in the field when needed.
- Inspect equipment for safety compliance and DOT requirements (for trucks).
- Work with ops/management to plan maintenance schedules that minimize crew downtime.
- Proven experience as a diesel/heavy equipment mechanic (tree service, construction, or similar industry preferred).
- Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems (essential for cranes, chippers, skids, and loaders).
- Experience with diesel engines and truck maintenance/repair.
- Welding and fabrication skills a plus.
- Valid driver's license; CDL a plus.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple pieces of equipment.
- Own basic hand tools (company provides specialty/heavy tools).
- Comfortable working outdoors and in shop conditions.
