Position: Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III - Fleet Operations Division

Overview

Equipment Mechanic I, II, or III – Fleet Operations Division.

Location:

Abilene, TX. Maintains and repairs a wide range of wheeled vehicles, including passenger vehicles, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment. The role supports daily operations and responds to emergency and inclement weather events. The level (I, II, or III) is determined based on experience, education, and qualifications.

Responsibilities
  • Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Analyze and interpret information from computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Complete repair order documentation and accurately enter data into the fleet information management system.
  • Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Inspect lighting and wiring to ensure proper function of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; move items as needed.
  • Conduct quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for use by verifying safety features (e.g., first aid kits, fire extinguishers, mobile radios).
  • Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
  • Use computerized diagnostic analyzers and perform complex diagnostics on vehicles/equipment.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Career Levels
  • Equipment Mechanic II – responsibilities include training less experienced technicians; travel to other shops as required.
  • Equipment Mechanic III – leads and trains less experienced technicians; performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience
:

  • Equipment Mechanic I – 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair
  • Equipment Mechanic II – 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair
  • Equipment Mechanic III – 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair

Education/Substitution
:

  • Associate’s degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience
  • Certificates from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis
Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. A Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required or must be obtained within 120 calendar days from date of course registration, with up to two attempts to pass the written and driving exams.

Equipment Mechanic I – Competencies
  • Proficient in using hand and power tools and mechanical devices
  • Proficient in mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
  • Proficient in diagnosing problems and repairing electronic and mechanical components
  • Proficient in computers and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Ability to read electrical diagrams and schematics
  • Adherence to safety standards and procedures
  • Effective communication skills
  • Knowledge of automatic and manual transmission repair
  • Proficient in brake repairs (antilocking, mechanical, air, hydraulic)
  • Proficient diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications
Competencies – II & III
  • Extensive knowledge of mechanical equipment operation and maintenance
  • Expert in brake repairs and troubleshooting electronic/mechanical components
  • Proficient in coordinating labor, materials and equipment
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting repair and parts contracts
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to extreme temperatures, noise, and wearing protective gear
  • Lift up to 50 lbs; frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs; kneeling required
  • Job simulations may be required; pre-employment physical; drug testing for safety-impact positions; random drug testing may apply
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification; may work alternate schedules during emergencies
  • Travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed
