MNT Regional Transportation Technician II/III – Maintenance Division (2600906)
Travel across the state to support Maintenance Specialty Crews as a Regional Transportation Technician. Extensive weekly travel (100% overnight) is required. Candidates should live within 140 miles/2 hours of the Abilene District Headquarters. CDL holders are encouraged to apply.

Salary ranges:
• MNT Regional Transportation Tech II, A17: $42,976–$64,469
• MNT Regional Transportation Tech III, A18: $45,521–$71,055
Travel with Regional Crews throughout the state to perform transportation operations, maintenance support, inspections, roadway maintenance and repair, equipment operation, preventive maintenance, traffic control, and emergency response. Independent work on assignments with supervisor referral for unusual issues.
- Assists with traffic control: placing/gathering cones, warning signs, barricades; flags traffic.
- Inspects barricades for compliance with standards.
- Operates light equipment (front‑end loader 0–1 QY, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, mower).
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, minor repairs, and completes required reports (time‑keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI).
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, assists during emergency situations (floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, hazardous material spills).
- Maintains highways and rights‑of‑way; performs skilled roadway repairs, highway striping, guard rail erection/repair, highway markers, signs, and hauls materials/equipment.
- Inspects traffic control devices at construction sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Operates heavy equipment (front‑end loader 1.5 QY+, tractor‑trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, dump truck).
- May serve as work crew project lead and train other employees (Tech III only).
- Operates complex heavy equipment (motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt distributor, profiling/milling machine).
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Experience:
1 year (Tech II) or 2 years (Tech III) of transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or heavy equipment operation. - Valid driver’s license and Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of hire.
- Knowledge of intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance, materials used in highway/bridge construction, Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, maintenance concepts, industry safety standards, hand and power tools, vehicle mechanics, and basic mathematical fundamentals (Tech III).
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, prioritize and organize work assignments (Tech III).
- Subject to extreme cold and heat (below 32°F or above 100°F for >1 hour).
- Subject to noise, vibration, hazards (moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat, chemicals), and atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation).
- Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs, frequently lift or carry up to 25 lbs; kneel, bend, crouch, lift objects.
- Requires pre‑employment physical; must pass drug test for safety impact positions; random drug testing applies.
