- Perform routine transportation operations or maintenance support work: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and assisting the public during emergency situations.
- Operate heavy equipment such as front‑end loaders, tractor‑trailer haul trucks, draglines, shovels, paint stripers, dump trucks and light equipment such as compact loaders, pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers, and mowers.
- Conduct preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment, and complete required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Execute safety and maintenance inspections on roads, bridges, guard rails, highway markers, signs, picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
- Assist with traffic control, place and gather cones, warning signs and barricades; flag traffic and inspect barricades for compliance.
- Move or pick up litter and roadway debris.
- Participate in the response to emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Assist in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Assist in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assist stranded motorists as required.
- Identify, analyze and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems.
- Operate complex heavy equipment such as motor graders, large excavators, heavy bulldozers, cranes, herbicide trucks, heavy asphalt paving machines, self‑propelled asphalt distributors, and profiling/milling machines.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Maintenance Tech I:
No experience required.
Transportation Maintenance Tech II:
Minimum 1 year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation or related work. Experience may be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related technical training or education may be substituted on a one‑to‑one basis.
- Valid Driver License at time of application (position requires driving a state vehicle).
- Commercial Class "A" Driver License (CDL) with an N Endorsement and no restrictions, or must obtain such a CDL within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
- Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent – must obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 30 days of employment.
- Commercial Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance procedures, materials, and equipment.
- Knowledge of highway/bridge construction and maintenance materials.
- Understanding of applicable safety standards, guidelines and specification codes.
- Computer proficiency in relevant programs and applications.
- Basic mathematical fundamentals.
- Prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
- Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
- Using electronic test equipment.
- Maintaining safe working relationships.
- Following verbal and written instructions.
