School Bus Driver (Abilene)

All Bus Drivers ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes. Operate the school bus that transports students and authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.
Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position‑specific duties.
Vehicle Operation- Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks and keep supervisory informed of any issues.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Compile required reports.
- Perform minor maintenance duties and keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
- Take student attendance on the school bus.
- See that students board and leave the bus, and cross the street in a safe and orderly manner.
- Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
- Maintain discipline; communicate with teachers and parents on a regular basis regarding student behavior while on bus.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Maintain all emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisory of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
- Install snow chains during inclement weather.
- Properly communicate with transportation office.
- Operate bus during irregular hours as needed.
- Keep safety certification current through training programs required.
- Be honest, trustworthy and respectful.
- Demonstrate sound work ethics and cultural sensitivity.
- Be flexible.
- Must possess a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License and outstanding driving record.
- Must possess a valid Texas School Bus Driving Safety certificate.
- Must have an up‑to‑date medical physical.
- Highway and school bus regulations.
- How to deal with the various needs of children.
- Scheduling and record‑keeping system.
- Analytical and problem‑solving.
- Time management.
- Effective listening, verbal and written communication skills.
- Work requires sitting for long periods of time.
- Intense concentration required, particularly in poor driving conditions.
