Job Description

Penn State Abington seeks an engaging and dynamic candidate to fill a newly created opening for a Professional Physics Tutor. This role will work in the Chaiken Center for Student Success to provide tutoring in Physics to undergraduate university students. The tutor will also develop workshops, structured academic initiatives, and other collaborative opportunities that engage faculty, student organizations, and other members of the campus community.

The Professional Tutor will interact with faculty and staff to promote the services of the Chaiken Center and to ensure that tutoring services align with the course objectives. The Professional Tutor will be responsible for maintaining a record for each student tutored, e.g., Starfish Outcome Notes, Client Report Forms, Satisfaction Surveys, and other assessment measures.

Job Duties
  • Provides individual Physics tutoring for students.
  • Assigns practice exercises as needed.
  • Mentors students in completion and review of class assignments.
  • Assists students in preparing for exams.
  • Assists students in developing greater self‑directed learning strategies.
  • Creates and maintains a Physics‑focused Canvas course shell to serve as a repository of physics resources tutors can use as they work with their students.
  • Monitors scheduling and documentation through Starfish.
  • Maintains detailed records:
    Starfish Outcome Notes, Client Report Forms, Satisfaction Surveys, and other assessment measures.
  • Creates and compiles physics‑focused instructional and marketing materials.
  • Develops and delivers workshops, presentations, and online resources for students on a range of physics topics.
  • Provides administrative support for the Chaiken Center for Student Success.
  • Serves as a liaison to academic departments and related services.
  • Performs intentional outreach and interacts directly with underserved and under‑resourced students.
  • Leads or coordinates special projects or initiatives as assigned.
  • Collaborates with professors to ensure that tutoring complements classroom instruction.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (preferred) in Physics or a related discipline, 3+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Understanding of and familiarity with effective assessment practices focusing on academic support services.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
  • Innovation and creativity in program development.
  • Proven presentation, group facilitation, and teaching skills.
  • Extensive ability to collaborate and develop relationships with a wide range of constituents.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population.
  • Outstanding teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work late afternoon/early evening and, on occasion, weekend hours.
Compensation

The starting rate for this job is $25/hour.
