Job Description and Position Requirements

Penn State Abingtonseeksengagingand dynamic candidate to filla newly created position of

Professional Writing Tutor .This openingis primarily in person andwill workin the Chaiken Center for Student Successtoprovidetutoringin Writing across the curriculum to undergraduate university students.

Thetutorwill also develop workshops, structured academic initiatives, as well as other collaborative opportunities that engage faculty, student organizations, and other members of the campus community. The Professional Tutor will interact with faculty and staff to promote the services of the Chaiken Centerand to ensure that tutoring services align with the course objectives. The Professional Tutor willbe responsible formaintaininga record for each student tutored, e.g.,Starfish Outcome Notes,Client Report Forms ,Satisfaction Surveys, etc.

Becauseof the needs of the campus, the ideal candidate will have astrong social/behavioral sciences background.

Job Duties
  • Provides individual Writing tutoring for students.

  • Assigns practice exercises as needed.

  • Mentors students in completion and review of class assignments.

  • Assists students in preparing for exams.

  • Assists students in developing stronger readingcomprehensionskills and greater self-directed learning strategies.

  • Createsandmaintainsa Writing-focused

    Canvas course shell which will serve as a repository of Writing resources tutors can use as they work withtheirstudents.

  • Monitors scheduling &documentation through Starfish.

  • Maintains detailed records:
    Starfish Outcome Notes, Client Report Forms, Satisfaction Surveys, and other assessment measures.

  • Creates and compiles

    Writing-focused instructional and marketing materials.

  • Develop sand delivers workshops, presentations, and online resources for students on a range of Writing topics.

  • Provides administrative support forthe

    Chaiken

    Center for Student Success.

  • Servesas a liaison to academic departments and related services.

  • Performsintentionaloutreach and interact directly withunder-served andunder-resourced students.

  • Leads/coordinates special projects or initiatives as assigned.

  • Collaborates with professors to ensure that tutoring complements classroom instruction.

Requirements and Qualifications Successful candidates will possess:
  • AMaster’sdegree (preferred) in English, Composition, Social/Behavioral Sciences,or a related discipline,3+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Understanding of and familiarity with effective assessment practices focusing on academic support services.

  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.

  • Innovation and creativity in program development.

  • Proven presentation, group facilitation, and teaching skills.

  • Extensive ability to collaborate and develop relationships with a wide range of constituents.

  • Ability to work with a diverse student population.

  • Outstanding teamwork abilities.

  • Ability to work afternoon/early evening and, on occasion,weekend hours.
