The School of Arts & Humanities is expanding its pool of qualified adjunct (part-time) instructors. Opportunities may exist to teach a flexible schedule that include teaching assignments during days and evenings. Services are contracted on a semester/term basis.
The American Studies Program at Stockton University is seeking applicants to teach graduate-level courses in American Studies with an emphasis in interdisciplinary and applied humanities. Area of expertise is open but may include Africana Studies, History, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology or Anthropology.
The Master of Arts in American Studies Program at Stockton University seeks a qualified adjunct instructor to teach AMST 5009 – Worlds of Moby-Dick on Mondays from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM, in a replacement capacity. This course is scheduled for Fall 2026 in an online synchronous modality. The ideal candidate will be able to provide interdisciplinary context for Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, examining subjects such as freedom and slavery, consumption and commodities, nineteenth-century American religion, politics, culture, and intellectual history.
Candidates will also be considered who can effectively teach a broad range of American Studies topics using diverse theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of American culture. Consideration will be given to scholarly and pedagogical approaches that support the program's commitment to applied, integrative, and interdisciplinary research in American and transnational literature, history, philosophy, politics, sociology, anthropology, and related fields.
Successful candidates may be considered for future teaching opportunities in the program.
Adjunct instructors are expected to:
- Teach graduate courses as scheduled
- Access student work and provide timely feedback
- Use Blackboard (the Learning Management System) to support teaching and assessment
- Support Stockton University's strong student-centered vision and mission
Demonstrated knowledge of American culture, history, literature, and/or related interdisciplinary fields
Ability to teach and mentor graduate students in discussion-based seminar settings
Familiarity with interdisciplinary approaches to research, analysis, and interpretation
Strong written and oral communication skills
Ability to use instructional technologies, including learning management systems, to support student learning
Master's degree in American Studies or a related discipline
Relevant teaching experience in the subject area at the collegiate level (or exceptional professional experience in a closely related field)
Ph.D. in American Studies or a related discipline
Experience teaching graduate-level courses
Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship
