Position OverviewThe Delaware State’s Species Conservation and Research Program is seeking a Seasonal Biologist to assist the State Raptor, Grassland, and Forest Bird Biologist. Primary responsibilities include bird surveys, identifying birds by sight and sound, monitoring nest boxes as part of the Delaware Kestrel Partnership, installing and maintaining nest boxes, and trapping, capturing and banding various birds of prey, grassland, and forest species.
FieldWork Expectations
Daily work may require walking up to five miles on varied terrain, operating and maintaining four‑wheel drive vehicles, carrying equipment, climbing ladders, and using binoculars and spotting scopes. Work may involve long hours under strenuous or uncomfortable conditions, including heat, humidity, and insects, on a flexible schedule with weekends and holidays. Applicants must be able to work independently and manage time efficiently.
ScheduleApplicants must be available for irregular work hours during the peak field season in Spring and Summer, including willingness to work on holidays, weekends, and outside of typical hours. A maximum five‑day work week (primarily Monday through Friday) will be maintained.
Key Responsibilities- Provide technical support in studies, surveys and research projects.
- Survey and monitor bird populations.
- Trap and band birds.
- Cooperate with other seasonals, volunteers and Division of Fish and Wildlife staff.
- Provide technical information and assistance to the public.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
- Assist in data entry.
- Document daily activities in records and reports.
- Demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Assist with equipment inventory and maintenance and other wildlife research projects.
- Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data.
- Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
- Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
- Six months experience in narrative report writing.
- Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
