Zoological Director

Provides executive leadership, vision, and strategic direction for all zoological operations at Emirates Park Zoo & Resort. This role is accountable for the overall performance, sustainability, and global positioning of the zoo across animal welfare, conservation, research, education, and guest experience. The Zoological Director ensures full alignment with international standards such as AZA and WAZA while driving innovation, institutional growth, partnerships, and long‑term conservation impact.

As a key member of the executive leadership team, this role contributes to organizational strategy, revenue growth, brand reputation, and stakeholder engagement.

Executive Leadership & Strategy
  • Define and lead the long‑term zoological strategy aligned with the organization’s vision and mission.
  • Act as a key advisor to the CEO and executive leadership team on all zoological, conservation, and sustainability matters.
  • Drive organizational excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement across all zoological functions.
  • Represent the zoo at executive, governmental, and international forums.
Zoological Operations Oversight
  • Provide high‑level oversight of all zoological departments including Animal Care & Husbandry, Veterinary Health Care, Animal Training and Education & Conservation.
  • Ensure operational excellence, compliance, and performance across all units.
  • Establish KPIs and monitor departmental performance and outcomes.
Animal Welfare & Collection Governance
  • Ensure the highest standards of animal welfare, ethics, and compliance with global best practices.
  • Approve animal acquisition, transfer, and breeding strategies at a strategic level.
  • Oversee governance of animal records (ZIMS) and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead crisis management and emergency response related to animal health and safety.
Conservation, Research & Sustainability Leadership
  • Develop and lead the zoo’s global conservation strategy (in situ & ex situ).
  • Establish partnerships with international organizations, universities, NGOs, and government entities.
  • Position the zoo as a leading institution in conservation, research, and sustainability.
  • Oversee funding strategies, grants, and conservation investments.
  • Promote scientific publications and global knowledge‑sharing initiatives.
Education, Guest Experience & Public Engagement
  • Ensure integration of conservation messaging into all visitor experiences.
  • Oversee development of world‑class education programs and community outreach initiatives.
  • Enhance the zoo’s reputation as a leading educational and conservation destination.
  • Support marketing and branding initiatives related to zoological assets and programs.
Infrastructure & Master Planning
  • Lead strategic planning for zoo expansion, exhibit development, and masterplan execution.
  • Approve design and development of animal habitats ensuring welfare, sustainability, and visitor engagement.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams on capital projects.
Financial & Resource Management
  • Oversee the zoological division budget at a strategic level.
  • Ensure cost optimisation while maintaining the highest standards of welfare and operations.
  • Contribute to revenue generation through programmes, partnerships, and experiences.
Governance, Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure full compliance with local regulations and international zoological standards.
  • Establish policies, procedures, and governance frameworks for zoological operations.
  • Manage risk related to animal welfare, safety, and operational continuity.
Leadership & Talent Development
  • Build, mentor, and lead a high‑performing zoological leadership team.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation.
  • Drive succession planning, workforce development, and capability building.
Experience Required
  • Minimum 10–15 years of progressive leadership experience in zoological or wildlife institutions.
  • At least 5+ years in senior/executive leadership roles.
  • Proven track record in managing large‑scale zoological operations and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong experience in conservation strategy, partnerships, and international collaboration.
