Job Summary:

The GIS Technician performs data and mapping activities using geographic information system (GIS) software under general supervision. This position will be based out of our City of Norman office. The GIS Technician will compile and integrate new cartographic data, draw maps using ArcGIS Pro, and manage the data that is entered into the GIS database. They also provide technical support to users or clients regarding the maintenance, development, or operation of geographic information systems databases.

The GIS Technician will play a crucial role in developing and maintaining databases, analyzing spatial data, and creating detailed maps.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Developing and maintaining GIS databases and using GIS software to analyze the spatial and non-spatial information in them.
  • Creating maps and graphs, using GIS software and related equipment.
  • Meeting with users to define data needs, project requirements, required outputs, or to develop applications.
  • Gathering, analyzing, and integrating spatial data from staff and determining how best the information can be displayed using GIS.
  • Compiling geographic data from a variety of sources including censuses, field observation, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps.
  • Analyzing spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports.
  • Designing and updating databases, applying additional knowledge of spatial feature representations.
  • Preparing metadata and other documentation.
  • Various other GIS data management needs.
  • Required Skills/Abilities:
    • Knowledge of GIS principles
    • Ability to use design software, including ArcGIS Pro, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, etc.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
    • Vision to read and review maps, legal descriptions, contracts, review data, etc.
    • MVR that falls within the guidelines of our insurance policy
