Summary:
The Lactation Consultant Supervisor is responsible for coordinating, delivering, and overseeing lactation and breastfeeding services within the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center Division. This role combines advanced clinical nursing practice, lactation expertise, program coordination, and supervisory responsibilities to ensure high-quality, culturally appropriate care for patients and families. The position supports outpatient pediatric and maternal-child services while ensuring compliance with nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative guidelines.
Responsibilities:
* Coordinates and plans patient care to meet established quality and safety standards
* Provides routine patient care utilizing and documenting the nursing process, including patient and family education
* Delivers age, population, and culturally appropriate holistic care in accordance with Nursing Division standards, policies, and procedures
* Practices in compliance with the Nurse Practice Act, CNDH policies, and applicable regulatory agencies
* Recognizes and anticipates common changes in the physical, biopsychosocial and health needs of patients experiencing urgent, emergent or non-emergent conditions
* Ensures patient safety through sound clinical judgment, appropriate interventions, and adherence to approved protocols and order sets
* Assesses patients in person and via telephone using approved protocols to determine urgency and appropriate level of care
* Triages and documents nurse calls, directing patients to appropriate services in collaboration with providers
* Develops and implements plans of care in collaboration with patients, callers, and the medical team, including education and follow-up as indicated
* Maintains accountability for patient assessment, application of protocols, clinical decision-making, and documentation
* Collaborates with providers, MST, emergency departments, and external clinics as appropriate to ensure continuity of care
* Provides breastfeeding education and training for patients, families, and healthcare providers
* Attends and conducts breastfeeding education classes as needed
* Coordinates patient, family, and staff breastfeeding education activities
* Develops or obtains educational materials aligned with current research and national standards of care
* Evaluates the effectiveness of education and adjusts teaching strategies based on patient and family needs
* Maintains a reference library of breastfeeding resources for providers and patients
* Participates in breastfeeding-related seminars and continuing education to maintain IBCLC certification
* Facilitates orientation and onboarding of new staff
* Assists with competency development, assessment, and ongoing staff education
* Manages staff schedules and leave requests to ensure adequate coverage
* Assigns duties and reviews work for accuracy, quality, and compliance with policies and regulatory standards
* Supports staff development through personal development plans and employment achievement plans in collaboration with leadership
* Coordinates the day-to-day operations of lactation services
* Serves as the liaison for lactation services between departments and Chickasaw Nation programs
* Ensures quality standards and regulatory preparedness are maintained
* Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises sterilization processes and procedures as applicable
* Assists with grant proposals related to breastfeeding and lactation services
* Maintains confidentiality, security, and integrity of data and information
* Facilitates continuity of care by preparing and transmitting protected health information to external facilities as required and documenting disclosures in the EHR
* Participates in performance improvement activities to measure and improve quality of care
* Oversees facility designation of the Baby-Friendly initiative, ensuring compliance with standards and certification requirements
