Job Description

Provides one‑on‑one support to at‑risk students within assigned classroom, follows educational and behavioral plans, documents daily activities, and models appropriate behaviors and interactions with students and staff.

Essential Functions
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication, etc.) to meet immediate health care needs.
  • Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students to maintain personal hygiene.
  • Performs test modifications (reading questions, alternate locations, etc.) to help students succeed.
  • Documents daily activities (behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times, etc.) to complete daily logs and hourly activity reports.
  • Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team under teacher supervision for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions.
  • Models conversation, manners, cleanup, listening, self‑management skills and everyday interactions to demonstrate appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Monitors the student’s daily schedule and behavior plan to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provides instruction in math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc., to implement IEP goals and assist integration into mainstream classrooms.
  • Remains with the student at all times to ensure safety, remove the student when necessary, and de‑escalate situations outside the classroom.
  • Responds to emergency situations (injured student, fights, etc.) to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Reviews daily and long‑term assignments to keep students aware of tasks and preview upcoming work.
Other Functions
  • Attends meetings and in‑service presentations to acquire or convey job‑related information.
  • Communicates with teachers, parents, and health care professionals (speech‑language pathologists, nurses, therapists, etc.) to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Performs other related duties assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.
  • Reports observations and incidents concerning specific students to appropriate instructional or administrative personnel.

  • Knowledge: Age‑appropriate activities for high‑risk youth; concepts of grammar and punctuation.
  • Abilities: Scheduling activities; gathering and collating data; using basic, job‑related equipment; flexibility to work with others; problem‑solving to identify issues; consistently attending work; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; handling frequent interruptions.

Working Environment

Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling; stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; fine finger dexterity. Job requires ~32% sitting, 37% walking, 31% standing. Exposure to injury or illness risk in a clean environment.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Licenses

Educator License with Stipulations – Paraprofessional endorsement or higher.
