Purpose Statement

The job of Teacher Aide (SPED 1:1) is to provide support to the instructional program within an assigned classroom, working one‑on‑one with at‑risk students, following educational and behavioral plans, documenting daily activities, and modeling appropriate behaviors and interactions with students and staff.

Essential Functions

  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication).
  • Assist medically fragile or physically disabled students with personal hygiene.
  • Carry out test modifications (e.g., reading questions, alternate locations) to ensure successful completion.
  • Document students’ daily activities (behavior, completed assignments, task times) for daily logs and hourly activities.
  • Implement, under the supervising teacher’s direction, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions.
  • Model conversation, manners, cleanup activities, listening, self‑management skills and everyday interactions demonstrating appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Monitor students’ daily schedule and behavior plan (class schedule, toileting, medication, appetite, clothing changes) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provide instruction to students in math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc., to implement IEP goals and facilitate integration into mainstream classroom(s).
  • Remain with the student at all times to ensure safety, remove the student when necessary, and de‑escalate situations outside the classroom.
  • Respond to emergency situations (injured student, fights) to resolve immediate safety concerns and/or direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Review daily and long‑term assignments to keep students aware of assignments and preview upcoming work.

Other Functions

  • Attend meetings and in‑service presentations to acquire and convey information relevant to job functions.
  • Communicate with teachers, parents, and health‑care professionals to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the unit.
  • Report observations and incidents relating to specific students (accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, rule violations, safety conditions) to appropriate instructional and administrative personnel.

  • Skills: Adhere to safety practices and prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge: Age‑appropriate activities for high‑risk youth; concepts of grammar and punctuation.
  • Abilities: Schedule activities, gather and collate data, use basic job‑related equipment; flexibility, problem‑solving, consistent attendance, effective working relationships, communication with diverse groups, confidentiality, teamwork, and ability to work under frequent interruptions.

Working Environment

Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Typical time distribution: 32% sitting, 37% walking, 31% standing.

Education High school diploma or equivalent.

Licenses Educator License with Stipulations – Paraprofessional endorsement or higher.

FLSA Status Non‑Exempt.
