Anatomic Pathologist & Histopathology Laboratory Director

As an Anatomic Pathologist
- Medical Director, you will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Anatomic Pathology services, including surgical pathology, cytopathology, and pathology subspecialties as necessary. In addition, you will be responsible for the diagnostic evaluation and interpretation of surgical specimens to provide accurate, timely, and clinically relevant pathology reports.

The ideal candidate will be board-certified in Anatomic Pathology with demonstrated expertise in general surgical pathology, with subspecialty training or interest (e.g., GI, breast, GYN, Derm, Hemepath etc.) considered a plus. The role combines administrative oversight with sign-out responsibilities and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

What you will do:

Responsibilities
  • Sign-out, Consultation & Communication:
    Interpret and sign out surgical pathology cases with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Perform gross examination and microscopic analysis of tissue specimens.
  • Correlate findings with clinical history, imaging, and laboratory data as needed.
  • Communicate diagnostic findings and recommendations to clinical teams, PI’s and study sponsors.
  • Quality & Compliance:
    Participate in quality assurance/quality control programs.
  • Maintain compliance with CAP, CLIA, and institutional guidelines.
  • Ensure timely completion and delivery of pathology reports
Regulatory Compliance & Accreditation
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations, including but not limited to CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments), CAP (College of American Pathologists), and Joint Commission standards.
  • Maintain laboratory accreditation by ensuring adherence to appropriate guidelines and policies.
  • Prepare for and lead regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Establish and enforce policies for quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing.
Staff Development & Training
  • Oversee the recruitment, training, and performance evaluation of laboratory personnel.
  • Provide medical and scientific training to laboratory staff and ensure they are up to date with current best practices.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, professional development, and high-quality patient care among laboratory personnel.
  • Monitor laboratory performance and implement improvements based on data-driven insights.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective action plans in response to any non-conformance, errors, or patient safety incidents.
  • Lead risk management efforts, including identifying and mitigating risks related to laboratory testing, patient safety, and data integrity.
  • Develop and implement protocols for addressing adverse events or near-miss incidents in the laboratory.
Clinical Consultation & Collaboration
  • Consistent with training and professional experience, provides scientific, technical and/or medical expertise to other departments within ICON laboratories including the specialty laboratory, project management, and business development departments.
  • This expertise will include the interpretation, correlation and communication of the medical significance of laboratory data. Providing professional, scientific, consultative or advisory, organizational, administrative and educational matters relevant to the services offered.
Qualifications
  • MD or DO degree.
  • Board certification in Anatomic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
  • Fellowship training in a surgical pathology subspecialty especially GI, Derm, and Hemepath desirable, but not required.
  • Active medical license in Texas.
  • Strong diagnostic skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage complex.
