Chemo biology Research Internship

The team of Ludger Johannes develops chemo biology projects based on molecules obtained through chemical synthesis and allows to address original questions of biology and biotherapy through this approach (Nat. Chem. Biol. 2020, vol. 16, pp. 327-336 ; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2021, vol. 60, pp. 14824–14830 ; Biomaterials 2023, vol 302, pp. 122298). We are looking to recruit an intern with a solid background in organic chemistry who is interested in synthesis in relation to biology and therapeutic issues.

The intern will be under the supervision of a research engineer and will participate in an ongoing R&D project in the laboratory. They will be involved in multi-step syntheses for the preparation, purification, and characterization of the obtained products. They will also share their experience with other chemists in the unit. The laboratory has the classic equipment for synthesis, purification equipment (UPLC-MS, preparative HPLC…), and analysis methods (500 MHz NMR, mass spectrometry…).

Formation and Skills

• You are a university or engineering school student with a background in organic chemistry at the master's level (Bac +4/+5).
• You are capable of participating in bibliographic research: use of Scifinder, Pub Med.
• You are familiar with the use of scientific software:
  Chemdraw, Mestronova, Top Spin, zotero…
• You have good technical skills in organic chemistry, multi-step synthesis, click chemistry, optimization of reaction conditions (reagents, temperatures, solvents…).
• You have a good mastery of analytical methods and purification techniques: column chromatography, precipitation, recrystallization, HPLC…
• Processing and exploitation of NMR analyses (1H, 13C, 2D NMR).
• Good level of English skills, both spoken and written.
• Proficiency in computer tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Required Aptitudes

• Autonomy, ability to work in a team: the student will be expected to develop an autonomy to carry out the synthesis, processing, and purification of compounds.
• Synthesis spirit, adaptability, scientific curiosity.
• The student will have analytical and writing skills: writing the laboratory notebook, analyzing experimental results, presenting results to the R&D team.
• Participation in the proper functioning of the laboratory: laboratory cleaning, consumables replenishment.
• Participation in the respect and maintenance of good safety conditions in the laboratory.
