CIRCULATION & TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARY ASSOCIATE

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY

Work involves responsibility for supervising and participating in the services and activities of a library program of broad scope, activity, and staff. Under general supervision of the Library Director or designated Department Head, oversees the operations of the Circulation and Technical Services Departments, and performs a range of complex and specialized library tasks requiring a high level of professional expertise and customer service skills.
This position may occasionally cover other public desks as required.
Provides direct service to the public in areas such as circulation, materials cataloging, acquisition and processing, and quality standards. Ensures strict confidentiality of library records.
Work is performed with relative independence in accordance with established standards and procedures under the direction of an administrative superior who reviews work through reports, departmental meetings, conferences, and occasional inspections. Supervision may be exercised over Senior Clerks. This position is full-time (35 hours per week) and includes morning, afternoon, evening, and Saturday work hours.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Provides superior customer service and patron focused solutions to library services.
- Manages library circulation services, including supervision of circulation activities on a day-to-day basis.
- Supervises and trains circulation staff and volunteers, and handles employee concerns and problems.
- Performs all functions related to circulation of library materials, including checking materials in/out, collecting fees and registration of new patrons.
- Develops, coordinates and interprets system-wide circulation policies and procedures.
- Evaluates circulation operation procedures and makes adjustments as needed to improve efficiency.
- Interprets circulation services/policies for the public, handles patron relations concerning circulation activities.
- Assists at Information Desk as necessary. Attends professional meetings and conferences.
- Performs related work as required.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of modern library science. Superior customer service skills and a patron focused work attitude.
- Considerable knowledge of reader interest levels, and of books and authors in general.
- Knowledge of automated library systems, computers, streaming services, databases and related electronic services and the Internet.
- Ability to assign, supervise, and review the work of Senior Clerks. Ability to evaluate books and related materials for library purchase.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative personnel, colleagues, subordinates, civic organizations, and the general public.
- Ability to interpret library services and activities to patrons, interested organizations, and the general public.
- Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, including electronic media.
- Graduation from a four‑year college or university, with some work in library science.
- Considerable experience as a pre‑professional librarian.
- Desktop publishing, video animation experience, and video editing, strongly preferred
