Inspection Services - Sealer of Weights & Measures
The Town of Agawam is accepting applications for one (1) Sealer of Weights & Measures. This position is an independent contractor for the Town of Agawam.
Responsible for directing, supervising, coordinating and participating in the work of Sealer of Weights and Measures. Incumbent is engaged in enforcing laws, ordinances, and regulations relating to the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices and the weight, measure and count of commodities offered for public sale, and in sealing or condemning devices tested. Work is performed in accordance with state laws, regulations, and municipal ordinances and is subject to review through reports and periodic checks by representatives of the State Division of Standards.
Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Inspector of Buildings.

Experience:
Essential Functions:
- Supervises and may participate in the testing, adjustment, sealing or condemnation, and collection of fees for sealing, all types of weighing and measuring devices, including commercial scales, liquid and dry capacity measures, linear, area, fabric and cordage measuring devices and commercial meters.
- Participates in and supervises the inspection of prepackaged goods and merchandise for compliance with weight, measure and count requirements and for proper labeling as to weight or measure and extended price.
- Supervises and participates in the calibration of vehicle tank trucks; calibrates weights and dry linear measures.
- Investigates complaints of short weight, measure and count; collects evidence of violations for presentation in court; may seize unsealed weighing or measuring devices or those not conforming to legal standards; testifies in court.
- Checks transient vendors for possession of license; inspects measuring and weighing devices used by such vendors for evidence of prior testing and approval.
- Gives advice to merchants related to packaging and labeling goods; solicits and maintains the understanding and cooperation of merchants and the general public.
- Keeps records of work performed by department and submits annual report to Director of the State Division of Standards.
- Must be proficient in all Microsoft Office products as well as have the ability to use computers, scanners, copiers and phones.
- Ability to coordinate all inspection requests that are received by either email or by phone.
- Performs related work as required.
- Requires advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Supervision Received/Exercised:
Employee works under the direction of the Inspector of Buildings. Employee seeks advice and counsel of the Inspector of Buildings on matters that the employee does not have the authority and / or knowledge to resolve. The employee follows Town and departmental policies, goals, and objectives.
Work is mostly performed in the field / public environment. Regular and predictable work ethic is a requirement.
Physical Requirements and Potential Hazards:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
