Position: Waimalu Elementary: Preschool Special Education Teacher, 62714 (2026-00813)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Special Education license from the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board.
  • Completed a bachelor's degree or higher by the effective start date of the teaching position.
  • Currently employed as a Teacher, Librarian, or Counselor (BU05) in the Hawaii State Department of Education.
  • Enrollment in a State Approved Teacher’s Education Program (SATEP) or completion of one within three years of employment.

  • Special education classroom experience in a PK-2 school setting.

  • Plan and facilitate Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
  • Exercise independent and professional judgment in carrying out daily functions.

Upon hire, an applicant must have a valid Hawaii teaching license or an Emergency Hire Permit. If not licensed, a maximum of three years will be given to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license through enrollment in a State Approved Teacher's Education Program (SATEP). Each year of employment, the employee must demonstrate active pursuit toward meeting Hawaii licensing requirements as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB).

It is the employee's responsibility to ensure the program enrolled aligns with the teaching line hired.

Payday

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first three pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or the previous business day) of every month.

Benefits for 10-Month Teachers
  • Compensation: 10-month teachers are paid according to the Bargaining Unit 05 10-month salary schedule.
  • 18 days of paid sick leave and state/federal holidays. Of the sick leave, six days may be used for personal or professional development.
  • Health Insurance:
    The State pays a portion of the premiums for enrollment in state-sponsored medical, drug, vision, and adult dental plans.
  • Group Life Insurance:
    The State provides a free life insurance policy for employees and retirees.
  • Premium Conversion Plan:
    Participating employees may increase take-home pay by having the State deduct health care premiums before payroll taxes are withheld.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts:
    Eligible employees can reduce federal and state income taxes and social security taxes through a tax-savings benefit program.
  • Retirement Plan:
    The State contributes to a retirement plan for eligible employees. Generally, employees with at least ten years of credited service who are 62 years of age, or those with thirty years of credited service who are 55 years old, may retire and receive benefits.
  • Tax Shelter Annuity (TSA):
    Eligible employees may participate in a tax shelter annuity program.
  • Deferred Compensation:
    The State offers a tax-deferred (sheltered) retirement investment program.
  • Temporary Disability Insurance:
    Qualified employees may receive benefits for a disability caused by a non-work related injury or illness.
  • Social Security:
    As an employer, the State also contributes to an employee's social security account.
  • Workers' Compensation:
    If an employee is injured while on the job, benefits covering medical expenses and partial wage support may be available through workers' compensation.
  • Union & Collective Bargaining:
    Employees have the right to join the union for collective bargaining with the State and employee representation.
