Under the general supervision of the Special Enforcement Section Supervisor, the position assists with investigative activities in detecting violations of laws, rules, and regulations covered under Title 14, Taxation, specifically under Section 231, and under jurisdiction of the Department of Taxation. The role includes providing support to investigators by gathering and organizing information, preparing written reports or spreadsheets, conducting office examination of tax returns to verify accuracy and completeness, and performing additional tasks required to support investigators and achieve the Special Enforcement Section’s goals.
MinimumQualification Requirements Knowledge
- Knowledge of relevant Hawaii tax laws, rules, procedures, tax rates, exemptions, deductions, extensions, credits, assessments, delinquent taxes, business licensing, tax office operations such as filing and information recording systems, both manual and computerized as they apply to filing returns, tax search and collection methods and procedures; interviewing techniques (not required but highly desired).
- Ability to think logically and analytically and to communicate effectively orally and in English; ability to elicit information from individuals and judge its relevance; ability to read, understand, and explain materials such as tax rules, laws, memoranda, procedures, and penalties; ability to calculate tax liabilities, penalties, and interest accurately; use and operate calculating devices, computers, and other digital devices; use tact and sound judgment in dealing with taxpayers, co-workers, and others;
follow oral and written procedures; understand and impact actions and recommendations regarding taxpayers; plan, prioritize, and organize work.
High school graduate.
ExperienceTwo (2) years of progressively responsible experience demonstrating numerical facility, logical and analytical thinking, and reviewing documents to ensure numerical data and arithmetic computations are complete, accurate, properly categorized, and recorded in accordance with relevant rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Other Information Desirable Qualifications- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university or an associate degree in accounting.
- Experience in investigation, law, taxation, or accounting.
Employee must hold a valid State of Hawaii Driver’s License.
