The primary function of the Forestry Assistant position is to implement day-to-day forestry operations of Parker Ranch's timber assets. This includes work in areas with native timber species such as koa (Acacia koa) and ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha), as well as non-native species like tropical ash (Fraxinus uhdei), sugi (Cryptomeria japonica), and eucalyptus. The role works closely with and under the supervision of the Parker Ranch Forestry Manager.

Ideal candidates are highly motivated, adaptable to changing tasks, eager to learn, and capable of working in remote locations under various environmental conditions. Responsibilities include timber management according to Parker Ranch's Sustainable Forestry Management Plans, such as tree planting and care, invasive species control, fence construction and maintenance, salvage timber harvesting, forest fire mitigation, research, and project implementation.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Invasive Plant and Animal Management

  • Implement large-scale projects to control invasive plant communities using mechanical, chemical, and biological techniques.
  • Plant a variety of tree seedlings as directed.
  • Properly apply chemical herbicides safely and legally.
  • Use firearms legally and safely when required.

Field Work and Management

  • Participate in forest expansion activities, including native and non-native tree planting.
  • Collect, process, and store seeds for forest expansion.
  • Safely fell, buck, limb, or cut trees with chainsaws.
  • Inspect and maintain timber stand fences.
  • Manage timber stands in line with forestry Best Management Practices.
  • Recognize project needs, nutrient deficiencies, threats, and adapt management practices accordingly.
  • Construct fences following approved methods.
  • Follow safety protocols at all times.

GPS and GIS Data Collection, Mapping, and Management

Collect and manage GPS and GIS data related to timber stands, access roads, invasive species management, planting, harvest planning, and other forest health metrics as directed by the Forestry Manager.
