Help protect and care for Honolulu's urban forest through expert arboriculture.
The Department of Parks and Recreation, Urban Forestry Division, Horticulture Services Branch, is hiring an Arborist in Honolulu. This position plans, coordinates, and oversees arboricultural activities involving the care, maintenance, and safety of trees and palms within City parks, streets, and landscaped areas, while serving as a technical resource is arboriculture.
What You Will Do- Plan, direct, and coordinate arboricultural programs for trees and palms within the City's maintenance jurisdiction.
- Administer and inspect tree pruning and palm trimming contracts, including monitoring contractor performance and compliance.
- Identify, monitor, and mange the cultural, health, and safety of trees and palms.
- Investigate public inquiries, complaints, incidents, and claims related to trees and palms and prepare written reports.
- Review plans and coordinate with City departments and contractors on projects affecting trees and palms.
- Climb trees to inspect, prune, and treat trees, including the application of pesticides and herbicides as required.
- Coordinate and implement safety and hazard programs related to arboricultural operations.
- Research arboricultural practices and conduct or participate in training, seminars, and in-service programs.
- Work schedule:
M-F, 6:30 a.m.
- 3:00 p.m. - May be required to work after hours, on nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Requires climbing trees using ropes and saddles and performing physically demanding tasks.
- Responds to emergency tree-related incidents, including work performed:
- in extreme or inclement weather
- near fallen trees, damaged electrical lines, or poor visibility conditions
- in traffic areas or off-road locations
- Serves as Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Education RequirementEquivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in horticulture, landscape architecture, or a related field.
Substitution:
Work experience may be substituted for the required bachelor’s degree in horticulture, landscape architecture, or a closely-related field on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree in horticulture, landscape architecture, or closely-related field.

Three (3) years of progressively responsible work in arboriculture, horticulture, or landscape architecture. This experience must include:
- One (1) year of demonstrated technical knowledge, research, and application of arboricultural practices; and
- Training or experience in tree climbing utilizing climbing saddles, safety ropes, and appropriate tools.
