Position Summary
Aiken Land Conservancy (ALC) seeks a passionate, creative, and mission-driven educator to serve as ALC’s first Education Coordinator. The contracted position will shape a new education and outreach program that engages youth and adults in conservation and natural resources while connecting new and diverse audiences to ALC and its mission. The position will work closely with other ALC staff, as well as the Board of Trustees, to shape a new program while aligning all work with current best practices in environmental education and mass communication.
PositionResponsibilities Offer Quality Environmental Education Programs to Youth and Adults
- Review current environmental education offerings in the region to identify gaps, partnership opportunities, and key focal audiences.
- Design standards-aligned lessons for K-12 students participating in place-based programming to meet the needs of area educators.
- Ensure that all insurance, transportation, and logistical needs are met.
- Lead hikes and other outdoor experiences for youth and adults in Aiken Land Conservancy properties and other natural areas within the region.
- Create and implement interactive programming for educational and/or community events.
- Maintain, organize, and order equipment that supports educational offerings.
- Collect data that tracks participation and supports the evaluation of all programming.
- Assist ALC staff with presentations to the community about Aiken Land Conservancy’s mission.
- Develop content for social media, ALC’s website, and other media outlets that connect new audiences to land conservation, natural resources, and ALC.
- Expand existing, and develop new, partnerships with educational institutions, conservation organizations, municipalities, and other community partners.
- Create, or contract the creation of, educational and entertaining short-form videos for social media that highlight conservation topics.
- Adapt content and strategies to support the education of diverse audiences.
- Represent ALC at local, regional, and statewide meetings to stay current on best practices related to conservation, land management, environmental education, and other relevant topics.
- Participate in other ALC events as time and interest allows.
- Review ALC outreach materials including, but not limited to, fliers, presentations, brochures, funding appeals, and articles.
- Tell the story of ALC’s education efforts to corporate sponsors, donors, and other interested entities.
- Visit private and public conservation lands with other ALC staff to collect photos and/or videos that support social media posts.
- Work closely with ALC’s Administrative Assistant to refine outreach strategies.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field or an unrelated bachelor’s degree with related experience in the field.
- The ability to communicate complex ideas to a range of personality types, backgrounds, and levels of understanding.
- Comfort speaking on the phone and to large groups of people.
- The ability to write in a way that is clear, accurate, and grammatically-correct.
- A valid South Carolina driver’s license or the ability to get a valid South Carolina driver’s license within 60 days.
- Ability to hike in a variety of terrain types in a variety of field conditions.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail and stay organized.
- Ability to produce quality work both independently and collaboratively.
- Comfort with quickly switching attention from one project to another.
- A demonstrated passion for conservation.
- Environmental education experience.
